Exclamation Mane pulling + upset horse...

Hey all,

I just bought a horse from my friend and we have a show on Sunday.
My friend said that he doesn't like his mane pulled but will allow it. Well, he DOESN'T allow it, he goes crazy!!!!

i don't know what to do , the vet said we could give him a mild sedative but he didn't tell us how much to use (pretty sure it is 4cc though)

Any suggestions from experience with sensitive horses??

I have been trying to get it done for the past 3-4 days but now he won't even let me touch his mane and I am only like 1/3 of the way done!

HELP!!!

P.S.- No food of ANY kind preocupies him....

I have found that the shadow from your arm moving back and forth is close to there eye, and some horse find it scary Try pulling his mane in a different part of the barn were there wouldn't be much of a shadow. Other then that i'm not to sure. My horse loves haveing his mane pulled, lol he falls asleep.
Good Luck

Someone posted that orajel or something similar can be used to numb the crest a little---good luck with it.

Make sure you do it after you've ridden him, because with exercise, heat and sweat, the hair follicles open up, allowing the hair to come out easier.

Some horses don't mind, others HATE it.

If his mane isn't really thick, would you consider cutting it? Not on the straight so it looks cut, but on an angle...you could always cut it on an angle and then pull a few strands here and there to make it look like its only been pulled.

Thin it out with a blade, razoring it, then take little sections and cut it to about an inch or two below desired length and when you cut, cut on an angle, it appears much more natural.

edit* That's how I do it on my TB becuase she hates it too. I'll upload a picture of her mane for referance in a second!

The wind was blowing and it wasn't brushed but you get the idea. I think it looks really natural for being cut. It was twice that length when I did cut it.

I'd recommend using a twitch. It works like a charm. I don't think anything beats pulling. Cutting the mane just doesn't look good to me.

Sometimes though you just can't pull. My horse is sensitive and I am not going to bother putting her through that when I can cut. I honestly don't think that if I had not told everyone, then who would have know her mane was cut in the picture. There might be some indications but it nowhere looks "fake" or "unnatural", but I suppose that is just my opinion.

I agree, and I think that your horse's mane looks very nice for being cut, but at the same time, I am just very partial to the pull.
The twitch is great and doesn't hurt them.
Worst case, you can sedate...especially for showing because pulled mane is better for braiding.

Thank you, sorry if I am getting a lil mean/protective/nasty, I have had one of those nights! I know what you mean, pulling does look so much better, and I know the twitch doesn't hurt, I just am lazy and scissors do a dang good job, plus...it makes me feel like I am fufilling my wee child hood dream of being a hair-dresser! HAHA!!
