Mane flaking off?

Eek!

Allure, my four month old filly, is having a bit of a "beauty crisis".

She's developed a sort of dandruff-type thing just behind her ears, where her bridle path will go when she's older. It hasn't shown up anywhere else in her mane, forelock or tail. When I pick at it, big chunks of dead skin (dandruff) come out of it, bringing bits of hair with them. It does seem tender (she will duck away and whine when I mess with it) but all it really looks like is dandruff!

Any idea as to what's causing it? She doesn't seem to be rubbing it or anything, and probably wouldn't anyway if it's a bit sore. I can't have my little princess losing all of her hair!

What would you put on something like this?

It could be where a tick was, and now the damaged skin is peeling off.

The spot is about two inches long... would tick damage be that extensive?

it COULD just be dry skin, try applying vaseline, allowing it to go soft, then pick it off! sounds yuk, but works!

I don't necessarily want it to come off... it's taking her hair with it!

well, i would just leave it as it is, Bud used to have really flaky skin, though it was his whole mane.........i just left it and it went away

also.........if you do pick it off...it WILL grow back pretty quick lol!

sorry, dont know much about ticks

It's tender, though. Meaning it hurts, so it's not something I want to just "leave" and hope it goes away, y'know?
