Post Mane Banding

Is a requirement to band a mane for halter? If so is there an alternate to banding?

It's not technically a "requirement" to show them banded, but is a general rule of show. A good banding job helps the mane lay down and show off the neck line of the horse better. I would highly recommend banding if you're thinking of showing in a halter class.

Steve no it is not a requirement. If your are going to a rated show you will find that you will most likely be the only one with a horse not banded. Even at the local saddle club open shows it is rare not to see a stock breed not banded.
It is really not that hard or time comsuming to do one you have learned how and developed a system. wink

At some of the larger shows you can find people that you can pay to do it for you! That might be an option you might want to consider. Make sure you have a slinky or other mane protector to protect the banded mane after they finish and you should be set for most, if not all of the show.

There are little sectioner tools that will help you get the sections even it thats what you are worried about.
Just in case you decide to "go for it" yourself here is a link that might help you out:

One of any judges pet peeves is sloppiness!! Banding not only completes the neatness picture, but also shows your horse's neck off. If a horse has a little too short of a neck, the more bands used, the longer the appearance of the neck and vice versa. banding is not hard and with practice, it gets better.

check out the link provided above. Banding is when you take a small section of the mane and band it at the top with a small rubber band. When done properly and depending on how long your horses mane is you can use up to 70-80 bands. It gives the horse the finishing touches of a neat appearance for the show ring and keeps the mane lying flat
