Managing "sweet itch?"

A horse I am considering purchasing suffers from sweet itch. Does anyone have any experience managing it?

She told me that she has never tried a sheet or hood to keep the gnats off him.

I just found out our horse has a mild reaction to the no-see-ums. I was told to bring him inside every afternoon around 3 PM before the bugs come out. That and use aloe vera with lidocaine (spray or gel, it is a sunburn product for humans) on the mane and tail where he is itchy. I also use a mosquito sheet with a belly guard and a good fly spray.

My horse has a horrible case of the itch. I only turn him out after dawn and before dusk. I feed him a coat supplement and most importantly an herbal fly control supplement. It's called Inside Out and has garlic and other herbs in it. This all seems to be helping him alot. I live in SW Florida so we'll see what this summer brings but I do think it will be better than summers in the past. Good luck!
