you dont have to have a fake tail to have a nice tail... this horse does not have a fake tail... and he is owned by one of the members/moderators Bailey-Boots |

My mare doesnt have the best tail either but if you want a full thick "Fake" looking tail I would suggest mane-tail-groom.

This tail is real too. I always kept it bagged, and never brushed it unless it was clean, conditioned, and dry. But your horse has to have good hair genes. My new horse doesn't have a thick tail, and it'll never be like the one below because he genetically doesn't have that much hair. So he has a fake one. Fake tails are easier to care for anyway. |

Here is what I do. First you need to build a really good foundation, which means that the dock of the tail all the way down to the tip must be healthy. This is usually accomplished by using a great conditioner, and really massaging the "bone" until your hands are sore. Not only does this help circulation, but it helps to release toxins and debris from the skin surface. Conditioner must be rinsed out really well. Any left in will attract dust, and clog pores which need to breathe to stay healthy and promote growth. The only leave-in I ever use is Infusium 23. I never over-apply, and shampoo it out every three days to keep it from gunking up. Condition after every shampooing. It is ok to shampoo often if you remember to replace the moisture that you took away. I only use a tail bag if there is a chance that the horse will catch the tail on something. I believe that braiding is not healthy for a tail. It pulls hair out, and causes breakage when dry. It also tends to trap and hold dust in the cracks where each piece of hair is laid over the other. I use a hot-oil treatment each month or every other month. The trick is to get it real hot (not hot enough to burn), apply it liberally, then seal in plastic wrap for 15 to 20 minutes. The plastic-wrap helps to keep the heat in, and if sealed correctly around all of the tail, you can keep the oil warm to hot by running hot water over the tail, or wrapping every couple of minutes with a steaming hot towel. For that thick-all-the-way-down look, bobbing or banging the tail is a must. I usually never trim more than an inch at a time, and straight across the bottom. If it is the first time doing it to a tail, you sometimes have to trim more. This allows the shorter hairs to catch up with the longer ones making the tail look thicker. Of course, some horses have much thicker tails than others, but by protecting what is already there, and letting it reach its potential, you will get a much thicker and fuller tail. NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, use a brush! ONLY USE A COMB after you have completely removed all tangles carefully with your fingers. This is easier if you do it while the conditioner is setting. |

I think Tobey's got a really nice tail, I don't have a good pic though. What I do is DON'T TOUCH IT!!! All I do is put conditioning stuff in every couple of days or when the tail is feeling dry, I never brush it unless its before a show. I kept it in a braid most of the time before I moved barns and that helped it grow. Just keep it conditioned and trim the ends every month or so just to keep it healthy. And don't forget that a healthy tail also comes from the inside, so make sure he's healthy on the inside
