Question Maiden Mares

what is the OLDEST age you would breed a maiden mare?

I want/need a colt for college, but I cant wait for my mare to have her baby, plus even if I did, I would have to wait another 3 or 4 years before I can train to ride him (going to college for horse training, stuff like that)

and I found a colt that I want, but I also want to breed one of my mares. however I dont entierly want a million horses

by the way, the mare I want to breed is a maiden, 13 year old

also how can you figure out if a mare is maiden? I got her when she was 8yr so she MIGHT have had a baby...but IDK

(please dont judge my situation)

We've successfully bred maiden mares that were 18 years old. One of our mares didn't even enter the broodmare band until she was thirteen. You shouldn't have a problem as long as your mare is healthy.

Oldest maiden I've bred was 22 she had a foal each year for 4 years. I've bred many that were in their late teens and had no problems.

My mare, who we bred last year and got a beautiful filly from, was 16 when we bred her so she had her foal at 17, she was a maiden mare as well. The baby turned out healthy, a little on the small size for what the vet thought my mare would have, but otherwise perfectly fine. So I don't think breeding your mare at 13 would be a problem, as long as she's healthy. We had that dilemma too, and that's what people told us. It should be fine. I'm no expert though.

I started breeding my maiden mare at age 17. She had twins and we had to pinch them off that year. Couldn't settle her the rest of the year. She got pregnant right away the next year and foaled at age 19. The colt was big and healthy and there were no complications. It sounds like in your situation it would be best to just buy what you want... don't add to the problem we're having with the horse market.

Don't add to the problem by breeding? And you are who to decide what someone else should breed? I had 13 foals this year and bred 31 mares for next. Bet that just pleases the **** out of ya.
