Magic?

Has anybody used Magic Calmer with any success?.I have just started using it to try to calm our excitable horse down as he seems to get sillier and sillier to the point now that i cannot even get on his back without him being completely bonkers , leading him out to the field is getting a bit of a challenge too . He is stabled at night but turned out most days .He winds the other horses up in the field wanting to play and dosen't seem interested in grazing. He is fed on Alfa A oil and high fibre nuts with garlic added and a himalayan salt lick with free hay. I think the Alfa A oil feed may be fizzing him up though it shouldn't do. His manners are generally improving til he gets his silly head on then he completely ignores the calming voice etc and just dances all over the place . Reminds me of a kid on speed !.
I think he is just being a typical baby and enjoying the oppurtunity to behave like one more often but it is making the riding difficult.

Well, I will have to agree on the "typical" part.

Instead of using calming agents that mask the issue, why not try WORKING the horse through the issue and train the horse NOT to be a fizzle head.

And when in doubt, find a suitable trainer.

This is MORE of a training issue over a feeding issue. I can pump my horse full of pure sugar and energy, and he will listen because his training overcomes his fizzle-headedness. Which all horses should be WORKED through.

Looking at the diet as well to see if there is a problem.....but 9 times out of 10, it is the rider/horse issues with training and such.

Can you list the amounts, what you are feeding daily?

Sorry Blistering Winds i didn't see your reply til today.Geni was having two feeds a day consisting of 1.5 scoops of Alfa A oil and 1.5 scoops of hogh fibre nuts. I understand what you are saying about working the horse through the silliness but Geni is extremely green and i do not want to make every session a battle. He had got to the pont of being dangerous not only to me but to himself so i have been addressing lots of issues. As things have turned out he hasn't been ridden for nearly two weeks now as we were advised to stop riding him as he had pain issues in his back and teeth troubles so we have been sorting those out and just going back over the basics with ground work.
As he hasn't been working as such i completely cut out the Alfa A oil and hey presto he is a different horse.I am not trying to mask any symptons just wanted to get him thinking a bit more instead of just reacting ott.
He has had his teeth sorted out (without sedation) so no more pointy bits jabbing in his tongue cheek and gums which in turn will help when he has a bit in.
The tenderness in his back (which incidently was an old issue ) has subsided and the flip side of him being off ridden work means his ground manners have improved vastly . He behaved perfectly while the vet poked and prodded him and he even commented on what a well behaved youngster he is.
I fully agree with what you say about masking the symptons but you have to have something you can work with to start with, he was so hyped up i couldn't tell what was a reaction to pain and what was just fizziness. Mission accomplished now and the Magic is no longer needed.!!
