I know i have asked this question before, but i have to ask it again. i have a dartmoor cross mare that wont lunge, she will start off ok, slightly annoyed at being lunged. then after 2 or 3 circles she will either stop dead and turn towards me, turn to the opposite direction, or stop and rear up and i feel really helpless. I have to buy a new lunge rein before i can lunge her again (the dog chewed it) so it wnt be intill next week, but i thought i would ask. And please keep in mind i do not have a school, i do not have a round pen, i dont have any transport. All i have got is a reasonable level feild, and a horse. |

in that case if she is in the open she has the advantage so i oersonally feel you need to get someone to help you you need one person to lunge an one person to actually lead her!

Thanks Cassidy, thats another problem, i dont have anyone too lead her etc. (oh no its raining!! *bangs head* i was going to ride her.) I wanted to lunge her beacause shes stiff on the one rein, it will give me a good look at her. *bangs head again and again* would lunging her in a corner help? i mean she would have less open space then, wouldnt she? |

when she turns towards you, shes saying, right mum ive had enough on my own i want to be with you! you have to get beside her and flick the lunge whip and send her foward... and big poraise when she does, it means you have to be quick on your feet. Dj used to do this, but hes now learning that he cant come to me untill im ready as im the "domanent mare". also what can help is getting a second lunge line and attatch it to the other side of the headcollar and bring it round there bum to help stop them turning in, this doesnt work on all horses though ,so be careful. I gottaught that trick in the pony club, and it does help with most horses. Good luck |
