Unfortunately, no, you won't be able to show her in SMS unless they have a SPB SMS class listed and I have yet to see one anywhere. I was thinking the same thing too cause DeDe is a natural at setting up and jogging along side.

You can start working with her to set up now and learning how to jog quietly next to you. Those are things they need to do in the LL classes too. As for training for the LL, I have worked on making sure my filly knows the commands verbally. It helps to learn them in a round pen to help teach her to move around you but make sure you do it in an open area too. DeDe will get a bit wild just on the lungeline in the arena only because she no longer has the round pen fence to keep her on the circle. That is something only time can fix since you shouldn't over do it with the babies.

Good luck and post pictures of your new girl!!

now... I don't know how halter and APHA goes, but you have to watch out. Some of them ...to be eligible you can't actually SHOW them prior to that futurity... might want to check on that as well. This is true for a lot of barrel futurities... we can enter an exhibition, but not an actual class at a show.

This may be a dumb question what is SMS? I don't think I will be able to show her before the actual fururity but here are some pictures i took of her the day after I bought her. She has a cut on her lower front right leg...which is almost healed up now. I should get some newer pictures of her cause she has already grown...please let me know what you think too.

Very nice little filly! She looks very correct!

SMS is short for showmanship. Sorry, I get used to everyone knowing what all the shorts mean.

I think you will do very well with her.

That is what I thought it is but thank you for letting me know

Thank you for letting me know bout her. I thought so too when I bought her at the sale.

I hope too just want to make sure I am starting this right. I have noticed that she doesn't want to keep going on the lunge line...she will do that beautiful slow jog for western then just slows down. Won't it look back if I have to keep clicking and cracking the whip? Most of the time she doesn't even purk up when I do that. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't worry about making her slow down right now. It sorta sounds like she is getting lazy and not using her hindend. That is something she will figure out eventually. Do you have a round pen you can use? That helps out alot and then you don't have to keep them on a lungeline but can let them move freely. Don't be afraid to get after her to make her move but don't over do it either. I only work with DeDe about 3 times a week and 1 of those is just on setting up and jogging next to me. The other times it is only for about 20 minutes at the most and if she does it right, meaning picks up the walk/jog/canter without acting silly going both ways, I will put her up, even if it only takes 5 minutes. Remember that they only ask that you make the yearling move for 90 seconds in the LL classes. 45 going one direction and 45 going the other is sorta what people shoot for. That isn't very long at all. Don't worry about her acting up too much, I have learned that the judges don't care so much about the buck or kick but they are watching the movement. Like suggested, check out some youtube videos to get an idea of what the judges are looking for.

I have gotten after her with lundging and she just seems lazy. I will have to see if I can find a round pen for her. I will keep working with her for short amount of times. I will try and get a video of her on the lunge line each way sometime soon. The weather is not nice here right now so hard to get outside. I have watch a bunch of video's of the lunge line competition, she will vary her headset sometimes...how do you work on that too?

I know not to push them when they are young lots of tiny lessons nothing long.

Oh, CUTE CUTE CUTE filly!! She is so "typie" and put together nice. Only one thing I noticed, get a GOOD farrier to work on those back feet. She want's to turn out a bit and a good farrier job, consistantly, will help that a lot.

Good luck with her. She looks to be a doll!

I have already bitted her up and lunged her with a surcingle to help her to get the idea of giving to the bit. That helps teach them where to carry their heads but you still need to make her have that forward motion and to use her butt. The trainer I have been working with does that alot with younger horses, it allows them to find the spot and you are not forcing it so to speak if that makes any sense.

I would love to see a video of her!!

that would mean Minnesota Paint Horse futurity. certain foals (by a nominated stallion) would be eligible for the breeders classes, and ANY foal would be eligible to enter once paid up for the open futurity classes.
