Lump on jaw?

There is a horse at the barn that my daughter rides for lessons. He has a liquid filled lump about the size of a golf ball in front of his cheek bone under his head. It sort of has a long, slightly swollen area in front of the lump toward the chin. It doesn't seem to hurt the horse and the barn owner took his temperature and it is normal. There was no change in his behavior either. There is no nasal discharge.
Any ideas?

Is it draining pus? If so, it's likely strangles, which is highly contagious.

Still could be strangles...before the discharge starts. My horse never got a nasal discharge and we saw the lump before it broke...so it wasn't draining yet.

It could be an abscess in the early stages, sometimes they don't hurt or appear to hurt the horse. Strangles has been going around in this area at a big show barn, but with strangles comes high fever.

My horse did not have a fever either. Maybe we just caught it early.

There can be many/several causes. One of my mares developed a fluid filled lump there from irritation from a fly mask!

If the barn owner is taking care of it I wouldn't worry.
