Lost Mare????

Well we had a bit of a torrid time last night. We freel leased our QH mare to friends to put to their Appy stallion. She foaled down a beautiful red dun filly with a blanket on Friday night. We went out to visit Sat. morning. All was well, both mare and foal looked well and happy. No problems with after birth or anything. Our friend came home from work about 7 last night and checked her, all fine and eating. He went to the pub for some tea and came back about 9.30. The foal was running around and the mare lying on the ground. He walked over to tell her to get up and she was dead!!!

She appears to have prolapsed and died, 24 hours after foaling!

We were very lucky with the foal. They have another mare with a 6 week old foal and this amazing animal adopted her straight away

Does anyone have any idea what may have happened here? We are just totally stunned

This is a total puzzle to us. She seemed tatally healthy when we saw her. Bright eyes happy and protective. I can't understand what would make her prolapse after 24 hours. I'm wondering if maybe her heart gave out?

I have no idea, no explanation, only to say I am sorry. Good thing she gave the foal though, again I am extremely sorry

Thankyou. Maybe someone else can come up with something. It was such a short time period between checking and the end, that there was probably nothing anyone could have done anyway.

She could have ruptured an intestine while giving birth. Hemorrhage happens usually 24-48 hrs after foaling.
She could have colicked. You could guess forever. Thank god you didn't loose both. Sorry for your horrible news. Wish you both all the best... prayers and huggss.....

Sorry about the mares loss. Could have been any number of things, some unrelated to foaling. She could have had an aneurysm that ruptured, which would cause sudden death, could have had a heart attack, could have thrown an embolism ( which can be birth related). Thank goodness the other mare accepted the foal.
