| Senior Member | Looking for tips for turn out
I have a dilemma I have a connemara stallion who will hopefully start teeny weeny showjumping next year. As a stallion he'd look better with natural mane at the stallions parades. as a sahowjumper-ugh. The base of his mane is si thick, there's no phisical way it'll stay on one side. I can keep it tidy for the show's day, that's all. I can predict that puuled and plaited might not look the best- because of the width of the base of mane. What to do???? |

Even at the top levels, you dont see jumpers with braided mains. Personally I love a pulled mane that stands up and is big and fluffy ESPECIALLY in the jumper ring haha. Pull it, dont braid it. Let his mane be wild. =)

My Clydesdale cross has a thick, coarse, black, wavy, long mane. For jumpers I just let it be, it's goregous flying in the wind. For flat classes I put it in a running braid, and do my best to make it neat. It's never perfect like all those sleek, fine, straight haired horses but oh well.

I was looking at him yesterday, maybe I'm imagining it, but seems like his crest slimmed down a touch with excersise, so might consider pulling. I know it's about poles staying up, but presentation is very important to me. And to him, too, his jumping is not only for fun, but it's his campaign as a stallion also. That's why I asked the question, it actually is very important to me. Not easy to re-grow 3 years of mane.

Is this the fella whose tail got dyed? I would try pulling his mane. Keep a skinny hood on him if you can and that will help to train it to sit down neatly.

*I have not read the above posts!* Have you tried conditioning it, and then thinning it out? With thinning sheers.

That's the one Chester, and I think the tail will need permanent dye too, and possibly filling in. My husband just suggested to keep his mane for the stallions' parades in spring, and pull then. He's against showing him in hand with short mane, feels strongly about it. After looking at him closer yesterday I think he'll be ok plaited, and that seems to me the only reasonable way to go... The hair quality is good, and it is thinned out as it is; there's no way it can be plaited for showjumping will a foot of lenght tho...so that's were the question is. French plait will look unprofessional, won't it? |
