| Senior Member | long forelocks I was just wondering about forelocks the other day. some of my horses have really long forelocks and i like them that way. but a lot of people tell me that i should keep them trimmed so that they can see better. is this true? they don't get trimmed in the wild and they seem to see just fine. i also like them long in the summer cause i don't have to worry and face flies. any thoughts?

| Senior Member | Paladin has a very long forelock, and no I wouldn't cut it. He makes due, and knows how to shake it out of the way if it needs it.

| Senior Member+ | Don't cut it! I would LOVE to have a horse with a long forelock... but all I've got is a colt whose forelock seems to have just stopped growing and a mare who rubs hers and keeps hers short anyway... Lol.

| Senior Member+ | My mare has a very long and thick forlock. I doubt it bothers her vision at all. Though if I am doing any type of riding or exercise where seeing is especially important, I will tuck it under the side of the bridle. |

| Senior Member | I trimmed Queen's last fall so it fell JUST above her eyes, I figured that it would be nice to have her able to see...THIS year I'm starting off with leaving it grow, because I think it's more important that she have the ability to keep flies away from her eyes than for me to "feel good" about her having a pretty trim when we don't even show. I'm also leaving most of her ear hair to keep flies out of the ears. Yesterday I went into the paddock to get her, and she had small flies buzzing around her ears that really seemed to bother her. Not only did she allow me to grab her ear and rub it, but she lowered her head so I could reach the other one. All forms of natural fly protection/swattage will be encouraged from now on.
