I didn't know you were "allowed" to trim them lol! I personally think long forelocks are SO pretty . It just brings kind of spiritual sense to the horse I guess. And yeah, if it gets in their eyes, just braid it or split it in the middle so it falls to the sides, or tuck it under the brow band. I'm sure it helps when the flies are bad too.

yup I tuck my boy's forelock underneath his browband when I need to, and while showing you can band it and put some mane and tail gel to keep it in place. Make a small band on top of the horse's head with only a bit of the forelock and then bring it all together to make a large band. So it doesn't look too poofy like a pony tail

I trimmed it about an inch before this picture because the hairs at the end were dead... haha

My Mini mare Lizzie has a forelock that literally touches her nose. I love it and I would never cut it!

Blaze has a long forelock, too. I keep my horses manes as natural as possible

I braid it up to keep it out of her eyeballs or just a band.

No, you don't need to cut it. In fact what do wild horses do?? I mean in all reality the forelock serves a purpose. Its great for fly control!! You cut it an you just spend more on fly control products.
Here is a good example of a long mane...and he does just fine with it
sorry dont know how to do big pics yet, but click and it will take you to a new BIG window..lol

I love the look of long forlocks, but I had to trim my mini's because he was very head shy, and while he is still a bit head shy, his training improved greatly after.
I say, if your horse is doing ok, leave it. Don't fix it if it ain't broken.

Grady's forelock looks alot like Dawn's horse's. (but longer, like she said) Call me weird for saying this, but I swear he LIKES it in his eyes. Whenever I move the hair out of his eyes he always shakes his head so it goes back where it's supposed to be. *shrug* I don't think long forelocks are a problem at all.

They are when single hairs get trapped IN the eyeball and make it goopy, watery and it gets crusty gross eye boogers all stuck in it.

I love long forelocks, unfortunately, Xiphias's forelock don't grow, her mane grows like crazy, and her tail is great, but not her forelock....Mikey my mini has a decent forelock, I hope to see it grow to the end of his nose one day! They can see fine, and I think it helps to keep flys out of their eyes too...

I used to have a mustang with a super long forelock but i just recently bought a thoroughbred with a long forelock but rather than cut it i pulled it just like i would her mane until it was the right length but made sure not to thin it out too much.
