Liniments

Im full of questions today, lol.
Well Kiera still has a huge knot in her flank from when she was kicked. She is still really painful and I was wondering if I could put some sort of liniment on there and massage it? I would think that would work but I am not sure.
I have mineral ice by mane and tail that I could use or is another brand better?

Thanks,

If she will let you massage it that is great, but remember it is a big bruise. and I know when I get bruises sometimes rubbing it doesn't make it feel better! But I use a Absorbine gel mixed with absornine liniment and gently rub. It is just a mix we have used for years and I like the spearimint smell!!!

I would check with vet to make sure massage is okay first, but if vet says nothing to worry about, then do massage, injuries will leave hard areas under skin and massage will help to work them out.

I still have a hard area from dog bite to calf 14 years ago, kept a big knot in area, and massage helped reduce it.

Our vet said it is fine to rub it. I want to start riding her again and I know that I cant when she has this big lump in her flank. She doesnt really want to move with it there and it sucks.

Well thanks for your opinions.

Sometimes what feels best is to lay your whole hand over the area and just, lightly at first, press. Sometimes the horse can take a lot more pressure than you think, but the initial reaction is to squirm/kick/bite because of the suddenness of the pressure, or the too-quick increase in pressure, etc.

Let her get used to the warmth generated by your hand, then slowly just move your hand around, moving the skin with your hand, so the skin is sliding over the internal stuff, not your hand sliding over the skin.

If you've ever been knocked in an area hard enough, the skin itself can be *very* sore to have something brushing against it.

What about putting a heat or ice pack and hold it on there?

I could but for right now I am going to try the massaging first. Should she be getting any exercise at all?
