Let's talk about Driftwood horses!

I'm a huge fan of Hancocks and Driftwoods but don't know a lot about Driftwood bred horses. So let's talk about this line.. I read they're very popular in the roping arena.
I'd just like to have a discussion, all feedback welcomed...Do you own one? what are the best studs etc..

Lol, in all reality though. I'm fond of Driftwood bred horses, I've worked with a handful of them. They seem to have good heads on their shoulders, but in my experience can be stubborn sometimes, but very quick learners.
I'm also fond of the conformation and the amount of bone in most Driftwood bred horses, I've yet to see one with tiny twig-like legs that are oh-so-popular right now. I like bone, I like substance, which seems to be a good trait. I also like the hocks/hock set Driftwood lines seem to throw. A nice low set, correctly angled hock.

My friend has one...used him as a jumper for years...he just turned 20 and looks fabulous!! A little bit of 'self-assurance', but all together a really nice horse with great substance. He has never had hocks injected or anything major (colic surgery does not count). He does trail, moves cows, etc. NOT so good on the quick turns, (picture a semi) but a good solid guy with a great mind.

Honestly, the old stallions you mentioned are too far back to be of any influence in todays horses.
There are a lot more horses in a pedigree than one that lived many years ago, as did Driftwood and Joe Hancock.

If you're seeing things you like in the horses, consider all the rest of the pedigree.

I get way more excited about who his sire is (Dressed Western.) I also love his dam. She had a nice show record and has produced a few performers besides my horse. I think she has one world show qualifier.

My guy also has Two Eyed Jack from his dam, but I don't see it in him.

My gelding does NOT look like a rope horse at all. He is built like a modern pleasure horse, kind of thoroughbred looking. Super tall. I think he has a pretty head.

I know that those stallions are too old to influence a todays pedigree but I see a lot of ranch/roping bred horses with those lines not too far way back, f.i. Sun frost has Driftwood Ike as maternal grand sire and that should influence his pedigree and progeny...

I own a mare that has Driftwood way back on her papers yet everyone always says she is Driftwood bred. And yes she was specifically bred to be in the roping arena but I use her as a ranch horse and team penning. She is short, stocky and tough as nails. Amazing work ethic. Calm enough for a child to ride and compete on yet still aggressive enough to win with an adult. All in all she is an amazing little horse and I would love another like her.

Bloodlines dissapate very rapidly that is one reason for line breeding I have a great, great grandson of king P234 but even that only gives me 6.25% king bred but if line bred could double or even tripple that . but even so i think the disposition of king bred horses is inherentable
