LETS MAKE A CHANGE!!Backyard breeders

I think we all here at HGS should start a petiton to stop back yard shoddy breeders. I have read countless threads on slaughter and feel that the answer lies in new laws!!!!!!!!!

We should all stand up against these people it is simply not good enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The goverment should be taking action against these people and it is up to us to bring it to there attention. People are breeding these horses for a quick buck with little regard for where these animals will end up or if the economy can withstand another poor horse with bad conformation and little prospects.

Please add your comment in support and we can make a change to the thousands of horses who are brought into this world to face a uncertain life!!

Breed for excellence not money!

Legislation fighting backyard breeders also affects careful, small, private breeders. Similar legislation was proposed here in the US for dog breeding, and nearly every dog welfare agency including the AKC opposed it because legally there is no way to distinguish between a backyard breeder and someone breeding world-class purebreds on a small scale.

If people stopped buying horses from "back yard shoddy breeders", they'd be put out of business with no government interference.

I have afew questions first.
Who determines who the backyard breeders are?
What would the penalty be if this passed?
What determines a backyard breeder?

^^^Good questions Peg!

We currently have more than enough "government interferance" in our Ag. businesses already, which has NOT lead to anything good for the most part. Bring the buracratcies (spl?) in to the deal and I only see it getting worse, instead of better. Let the market set the pace and it will do a much better job of "regulating" the industry.

Besides, "backyard breeders" of the poor type do not care about the horses now, and they are usually the kind that do not care about laws.

Yup...wouldn't work.

Just don't buy horses from backyard breeders.

What are the standards the horse must live up to so that they arn't considered a backyard bred horse?

The only way it cant actually be stopped is if we just stop buying from them.

Can we first make it illegal to be STUPID and IRRESPONSIBLE??? That would solve oh so many issues if we could round up all of the ignorant, irresponsble animal owners, buyers, breeders and just throw away the key... only problem is that we'd have to dedicate several states just to house them all...

Seriously you can not legislate for stupidity....you end up taking away the abilities and rights for those of us who ARE not irresponsible, who DO think things through carefully, etc... Ignorance can not be legislated against, nor can laziness, etc... because those people won't generally follow the laws to begin with and all that happens is that the people who DO follow intelligent practices and DO follow rules and laws end up punished.

To me, anything that restricts human rights and freedoms is wrong. Yes, there are idiots out there using poor breeding practices. But to restrict their right to breed is going to impose on many good breeders as well.

Amen to that. I would truely love for all the idiots to stop breeding c.rap for a quick buck, but unfortunately I really cannot see a way for that to happen. Firstly a standard to define a "backyard breeder" would need to be established. If it was along the lines of "anyone breeding bad horses for money", then what if the breeders just said "no, I'm breeding for a foal out of my great mare to keep" and then just end up selling it anyways?

Also wouldn't someone have to come out to every horse owner's house to determine whether or not they thought they were backyard breeders? If someone really was an irresponsible breeder, what would make us think they would subject to having their stock checked to depend whether or not they were "worthy"? Not to mention it would be nearly impossible to locate every horse owner, and I doubt many people would voluntarily give up their name and address stating that they have horses that they would like to breed and they need them checked.

I would be p.issed if the government tried to tell me if I can or cannot breed my horses. Yes it is horrible how many c.rappy horses are out there flooding the market and needing homes, but unless we can find a cure for stupidity, then I don't think it'll be stopping. The thing to do would be to EDUCATE as much as possible about good breeding practices, but the irresponsible wouldn't be likely to listen.
