Lets here those green horse and green rider stories.

This is inspired by another thread, so we can share and not take over that one.

so lets hear the stories! Be it good ones, or bad ones.

Im still an extreamly green rider, and was when I got Kinta a year ago. She was a pretty poorly "Broke" mare. She used to run people into fences, had many bad habits and horriable balance.

I dont know how we did it without lessons but we did it. I can now ride her tackless and we started jumping. No lessons whats so ever. Although we are rusty now because of so much time off. I know we will get there again. Now im not saying for everyone to go out and do it, but thats my story in short

My first horse was a crazy 12yo grade palamino mare. I rode her in a lesson one day, and I clearly remember thinking "I'm so glad I never have to ride this horse again"... my instructor always gave me the crazies... then I was grooming her afterwards and my mom came up to me and said that she was for sale and did I like her. OBVIOUSLY I said YES... I was 12 and had never had my own horse!! She was 12yo and green broke.

After that she just got crazier and crazier and developed a rearing problem. My trainer offered to buy her back from us, but I refused because she was MINE. LOL!!! Needless to say she made me into one heck of a rider I wouldn't have changed it for the WORLD! I had her until she was 22, and then gave her to a girl.

My Greenie...

Green Horse..... Tucker. Bought him when he was 8. He had been ridden by kids.... no formal training.

Green Rider...... Me. Just started riding horse when I turned 40. Had taken a few lessons before I bought Tucker.

Many lessons, tears, laughter and 3 years later....

I was 16 she was 13 months.

She was anti-social, tried to kick you in the head if you picked up her back hooves, didn't know how to lead and everybody thought she was going to be ugly and turn out useless. I wasn't used to being in charge but I knew if I wanted a horse this was going to be my chance.

I saw what could be in time. Everything was there but nothing was "flowing" yet.

What I had to work with

It took weeks to get her to acknowledge me, another week to get her to stand still for me to pet her, every trick in the book to teach her to stand still for the halter and not run. more tricks to teach her not to bolt as soon as she felt the halter coming off.

i was used to working with experience horses from the ground. She challenged me in anyway and forced me to admit that I needed to think outside of the box. She brought out the leader in me.

I'm surprised we didn't kill eat other. I sought advice, read books, looked at forums for more answers. But nobody would come out of their houses to help. They'd say they would but than they'd refuse.

She was severly herd-bound. Most herd-bound horse I've ever met. If they disappeared she'd run through fences. I started reading about join-up and ways to teach a horse not to be herd bound.

Days of crying, days of laughter, days of pride

The most AMAZING day of my life was when I went to just hang out with her and was heading back to the tack trailer to grab my coat. I had 2 acres to walk. She followed me every step of the way her head at my shoulder. she never stopped or looked back. She was my partner. Even when the herd came running up, she staid solid by my side. I cried that day from joy.

By the end of the summer when I backed her for the first time I knew what we could do. I kept it simple just sat on her. taught her to give to pressure. Practised saddling and bridling. I taught her to enjoy riding that it wasn't a chore. It could be FUN.

the day before her birthday

We've almost killed each other more than once. But our bond is whole. Shes my partner in crime and a shoulder to cry on. I'm her safe zone. If shes with me nothing will ever hurt her.

My funniest thing I now know about her is that if shes with me she'll beat up the lead horse cause she knows I won't let him hurt her. Sunrise sees me bossing him around so she believes that she can too..but its only when mommy's there

a couple of weeks ago

we might be Green + Green but we believe in each other and I always have help to turn to if I ever need it.

LMAO ok I'm done!

Three years ago I bought my paint gelding as he was advertised as broke. Well putting it mildly I found out after he had been rode a total 10 times and was drugged when I seen and bought him and he was only 6 years old. After alot of tears and a few bruises I can say that I am glad that I bought him and wouldn't trade him for the world. I can say that I know I still have a lot that needs to be done with him training wise but I have been told by a trainer that I am doing a great job with him since I have no "training" with him. However I am always open to offers of advice when it comes to working with him.

Excuse me and my goofy smile and my messy hair.
