Can anyone give me some info on the Lethal White Syndrome? We recently lost a foal to what we believed was the Lethal White Syndrome and I would like to know more about it. I did research it online, but I would like to know what everyone here knows about the syndrome. Thanks Haley |

My ex-nieghbors mare had a lethal white baby I think it happens when you breed two tobies together then if the baby is born with blue eyes and pure white there is like a 0.1% chance it not being a lethal but if the baby has brown eyes and or a spot on it like the size of a or a dark color pigment on the skin it has a 99.99% chance of being a non-lethal white. Usaully the foals inside and organs arent developted yet and the cant got to the bathroom regaullary...Its so sad when it happens...Im not 100% percent ALL my info is rite but the part about coloring is... [ August 31, 2003, 12:44 PM: Message edited by: Dakotas_Black_Magic ] |

First of all Lethal White Syndrome is carried in the Overo Gene, not the Tobiano Gene. Two Tobis (unless carrying the Overo making the horse a TOVERO) gene will almost never throw Lethal White. They can however throw a homozygous which a 100% color procucer for the Tobiano Gene. A Lethal White is thought to be a 100% color producer for Overos (which does not exist) but the condition is always fatal, and always carried by Overos. A Cremello is a double dilute, which is not related to a Lethal White. Again, a double dilute inherited a dilute gene from the sire and a dilute gene from the dam (dilute is a solid color trait, overo is a paint color trait..not related). This double gene makes the horse homozygous for the dilute gene which means that every baby this horse has will be a dilute (palomino, buckskin, or cremello). Hope that wasn't confusing and I hope it helps. |

Actually it is pretty rare for a Tobiano to throw the Lethal White Gene because Tobianos don't regularly carry the overo gene as well, and the liklihood that two Tobis carry the Overo gene, and that BOTH pass it to their offspring is uncommon. Yes it can happen, but the Lethal White Syndrome is synomomous with, and ONLY with the Overo gene.

I think she meant a tobiano and an overo cross. That would up the odds greatly. Still not a substantial chance, but a greater one than two tobies.

I have an Overo mare that I bred last year to a TRUE Tobiano and had no problems....I consulted my vet before hand and this is what I was told. If I breed my mare to a TRUE Tobiano or a TRUE solid I will not have any problems. I greatly increase the risk that 1 out of 4 foals will have the lethal white gene if I breed her to another Overo or even a Tovero. My friend bred her Overo mare to an Overo stallion and was lucky...I guess if you are willing to take the risk, I wasnt.
