It appears that I have just lost a pure white colt from an Overo/Overo cross on a mare purchased from Estabrook Ranch in SD. They don't test for Lethal White, so I sent the colt's blood to U of Cal. Has anyone else had that experience and should they owe me anything? They say they do not. Don't reputable breeders test their stallions for the gene?

YES!! Lethal white is not uncommon especially with over/overo crossings. Most responsible paint/overo breeders are very cautious about blood typing their breeding stock to see who carries the gene. Never breed two horses that carry the gene. The lethal white is also found in cremello horses and there are a couple of other colored breeds that carry it, but it does not seem as dominate as in overo. Sorry about your loss. Jane |

If athe contract stated that there was a live foal gaurentee, then they are responsible and must either repay you or allow you to breed again at no charge. I suggest that you choose a different mare though if you choose to rebreed. Check your contract for an LFG or LCFG.
