Leg Markings!

You know, I've never realised how much Dinah's leg markings have changed since I first got her on loan! It's happened really gradually (over 3 years) but look! (and am I the only one who thinks that her leg markings are really like Bess'? LOL)

this one must have been the first time I ever saw her. However, they were shaved, so you can't tell so much.

her feather had grown a bit here, so you can see how much black she had up the fronts there. Keep an eye on those white markings, too. This was definitely after the first because by here she'd had those hooves trimmed.

Especially on the backs, the black has really started to vanish! Not so much on the fronts though. But the white bits have definitely gone around the sides.

a different view of the above

these were taken today - look how little black she has up the fronts, if any! It looks like she is wearing little boots or something, LOL.

the back ones have really lost the black drastically! Instead of having quite a bit of black all the way up, she just has stripes up the insides.

I knew that horses leg marking sometimes changed over time - but not like that!! and I never realised till I was just looking through pics now (and comparing Bess's legs to hers.) Wow..

and, btw, does anybody know what her leg markings would be called, if they have a name? I'm just curious, cause I don't have a clue...

You can really tell when you put these two together.

My bay mare does the same in the winter when she grows her winter coat in. When she sheds out for the summer her legs are black again! I think it's pretty common. Or she could be sun bleached... I think the white part would be called a coronet or maybe a part or half coronet? If she has dark dots in the white those are called Ermine spots.

Thing is, all of those pictures were taken over the last three summers. So it's not a summer/winter thing.
