Leg clipping step-by-step with pics

Ok...leg clipping. My lovely assistant is Pretty Western, a 9 yr old Paint mare

First you need a good pair of clippers with sharp blades. I never buy actual "horse clippers" I buy mine from Walmart in the people department, only cost like $20, as opposed to $60+ for the same clippers from a tack store.

These are adjustable clippers, which means you can make the blades a different closeness by adjusting the lever. Normally they will be 10-15-30 adjustable blades.
When the blades are as far out as they'll go it's a 10 blade, this wont clip the hair as close.

Halfway down is a 15 blade, this will clip a little closer

The blades the farthest down is a 30 blade, this will clip the hair really close to the skin. When clipping for show I use a 30 blade.

Now on dark legs you only want to clip the long hairs around the coronet band, around the ergot and up the back of the leg a little.

Clip upwards about 1/2 and inch all around the cornet band

Then clip up the back of the leg and around the ergot to get rid of all the "feathers"

Clip up the back of the leg only about to the knee

Then you have a neatly clipped dark leg

For white legs start clipping at the coronet band clipping in an upwards motion all the way to the end of the white sock

Be sure to keep the clipper blades flat against the leg and clip up the back and around the ergot getting all the long hairs

Finished front leg

Do the back legs same as the front white or dark leg. If you have a horse with white that goes far up the leg clip that too, but stop if it continues on up into the body

Finished back legs

To accent those neatly clipped legs for a show you can put baby powder on them and they will be sparkling white!

Hope this helps, let me know if I need to explain anything better!

Wow thanks so much, although you make it look so easy lol.

Now we need a how-to on clipping the face and ears!
