I don't know how many people have seen or know about the traditional tack designed for paso finos. I thought it might be neat to share what I know. The bridle that is made for pasos is called a Jaquima. (Hakma) It is the origin of the word "hackamore" There are several parts of the jaquima. Here it is all laid out, less the bit. ![]() You can see the reins there at the top. They are one continuous piece, like a roping rein or english reins. There is also a core piece that is compromised of a browband, and an interesting cheek piece and nose band assembly. The side rings of the noseband are attached to the noseband strap and the cheek pieces buckle onto them. The chin piece is also separate from the noseband and cheek pieces. Enabling the rider to customize the fit and function of each. See in this picture, how the cheek pieces have a buckle attachment on the noseband ring? They can also have english style hook and tab attachment. (the bit hanger is stuck in there, for some reason? LOL) There are rings at the bottom of the chin piece, a set of reins is attached to them. Here is a noseband and chin piece. ![]() ![]() In the first picture there is a piece to the right, that is a bit hanger. Similar to a bridoon carrier. There are reins for the bit as well. There is another neat piece that goes with this type of bridle. It is called a pisador. (pea-sa-door) "A pisador is an imperative piece of equipment for anyone that does a lot of riding, whether it be in the show ring or on the trail. A pisador will save you from having to lead, lunge or tie your horse with the reins. This way your horse's tongue and bars will never be in danger of being hurt should the horse pull back fast." A pisador goes around the throatlatch of the horse and the free (rolled up) end is attached to the saddle. OR it attaches under the throatlatch if there are two free loops. In the first picture see the longer pieces? There is where you would attach the pisador on a bridle like that. (look at the below picture also) ![]() At rest or lunging, you remove the bit hanger and you essentially have a lead and halter on your horse. ![]() ![]() Here is a typical paso fino bit -

Great info Heather!! I didn't know they had special tack, very cool The bridle kind of reminds me of some endurance bridles they have now, where you can remove the bit. Pretty neat!

I know that the noseband is the main contact point...and the bit isn't touched much.

Hello Fellow Paso Person, I Am New To This Forum And It Is Great To See Other Paso Lovers Out There. Thanks For Sharing This Information, I Have Found Out That A Lot Of People Do Not Understand The Tack That Most Paso Owners Use And The Purpose That It Serves. |
