Lead Changes

I have been trying to get my pony to do flying lead changes for a long time! We do hunters together and it has been really hard. I know he can get him, because he changes in the field and sometimes when I am on him. It is much easier when I am going at a more foward pace, but if the lines are set shorter I have more trouble. I have been wearing spurs, which really helps. Since it is pretty much impossible to place if you miss changes, I have been asking over the jumps. That has been working pretty good. Although I really do not like how it looks and if I miss it over the jump, then I got a problem! So do any of yall have advise? Sorry for the freakish-ly long post

Changing in the field is SOOOO much different than changing under saddle. Does your horse collect and seek contact with the bit? Is he able to move his shoulders and HQ independantly simply by asking? What sort of degree of training has he had?

all horses can do flying lead changes - they do it when they get off balanced when cantering, sure mac can do it, its because he gets off balanced VERY quickly because he was a ranch horse before and he had no sense of balance when riding all he knew was stop, go, and turn
