How long does your horse lay down to rest on average? Mine lays down for over an hour at a time during the day. Freaks people out but it's normal for him.....

When my horse was "stalled" he normally lays down for HOURS... he is not lazy, just likes his naps during the day. He will actually eat his grain, then save his hay till after the nap. Talk about ******** some people out. They think he is SICK... he won't eat. Give him time, he used to be in a lot, and he had his own routine down and that was the way he enjoyed his day. He is outside (in and out at free choice) for now, getting "better" so I don't think he lays down too much anymore.

I got a call today cause my horse was laying in his run. Not thrashing or anything. She said that when she went in to see if he would get up, he just looked at her. So she called me. (she's new so she hasn't learned yet). So, I go out, he hasn't moved. Mind you it had been almost an hour from what the one lady said, and it take me 20 min to get to him from my home. So over an hour now he's been down. He does the same to me....just looks at me. Course that is normal. you can go and jump on him and he won't move. So I stand there, and he decides it's time to get up...gives me that look of, AWW mom.....dang it.... Checked him out, he's fine. The lady wanted to call a vet, but another boarder cornered her and said not to worry, its normal for mine. He never grew up I guess...lol. I found out he had laid down for almost 2 hours the other day. She had checked him out after he got up, but he seemed fine..

WAY FUNNY!!! Same with mine. He is like, OH you are NOT serious that I have to get up. How about you come in and let me play with your shoes for a while. He sounds like he does the same as yours. When they do get up it is like, OOOOOHHHH bother! I guess I will. Way funny they learn after a while - other borders that is!!!!

She missed allergy season. My horse gets allergies just as bad as mine...watery eyes, sneezing, coughing...looks and sounds like he's DYING. That is the funny stuff with new borders. My vet gets a call once or twice a year because of him and new boarders not understanding why I'm not nervous about it.

Spy is a night rester. When I had him at my house (aww, those simple luxuries) I would go out before I went to bed and he would be laying in get this, not his stall, nice cushy shavings, but in teh corner of his paddock, same corner, every night. On horse show mornings, really early, he would be laying down then too, so he rests and sleeps during the night. katie pony wil lay down periodically during the day to sun herself, all stretched out like she has passed to horsie heaven, really freaks people out too, the new borders are way funny, calling me, you better get over here, katie doesn't look too well. We think she is either getting hard of hearing, or selective hearing, she won't respond when sleeping, but let us open a peppermint wrapper and she can hear that

my horses will often lie flat out in the field soaking up the sun for hours. im not talking lying on their barrel head up lying down either but flat out head-down, dead-looking lying down. Raven is terrible for it and Jess is nearly as bad. They both lie down for a couple of hours at a time in their stalls as well. They dont so it in winter but they are terrible sun-worshippers. They have even freaked me out a couple of times cos Raven will actually lie really really still without even twitching her tail or anything. Lou

Mine has done it to me a few times as well. Laid completely still, not moving, barely breathing where I couldn't see....wouldn't get up when I came over.....GOSH I could have killed him right then and there for giving me a heart attack....

When my horses are in their stalls, due to bad weather, its nothing for them to take 3 naps a day. When outside, every morning both will be laying under lean too very much looking DEAD. And when they are laying down you can mess with them all you want and they will not get up until they are good and ready. |

rustic..don't you love it? Mine you can clean out his hooves, brush his mane and tail, sit on him, bounce on him, and he just lays there. My kids have a ball. THey get to love on him all they want. He gives them warning when he gets up too (I'm with them while they love on him, so don't freak)...He picks his head up, slowely rolls up, then waits till they move before he gets up. Pretty good for a 5 yr old don't you think? (yes, braggin about my baby boy...)
