| Senior Member | Late Vaccination Question-SECOND QUESTION POST #9
Hey Guys, We are doing our own vaccinations this year and I finally picked who we are going to be getting the vaccinations from. However I am used to your typical 5-way and 3-way but this company has a 6-way that would cover all our bases. This shot includes: FLUVAC INNOVATOR 6 Protection against:
Any experiences??? Please let me know since I am about to spend several hundred dollars on this vaccination- which is still way cheaper than my vet. THANKS!

Any vaccination can cause adverse reactions. Just because a vaccine is a 5-way or 6-way doesn't mean it's bad. Many many doses of 5-way and 6-way vaccines are given every year with no serious adverse reactions. The big question is where are you located? And what kind of management and use do these horses get--boarding, competing, stay-at-home? Depending on the answers to these questions you may not need to vaccinate against some of the diseases this vaccine is for and you should most likely be giving others live WNV and Rabies.

Ryle, All my horses live at home on my farm, but we do multiple disciplines and do compete away from home and go on trail rides. I asked my vet and she recommended west nile, east and west, tetanus, and flu- and then of course strangles fro the ones who travel and rabies for all. I am nervous about the reaction because I have a two year old whom I don't know of his previous vaccination history and I don't want to overload his immune system and I have a horse that experienced botulism- and survived, is 100% sound and healthy- but I am worried about too much for his immune system. Can you recommend an option and a place to get it? I was going to go through Allivet. Thanks!

The other way I could do it would be West Nile vaccine Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis Tetanus Toxoid in one shot and then flu in another shot. That way I could do them slower. That may be a better option. It might cost more but I'd rather be safe than sorry- then maybe after this year I would go to the 6-way?????? HMMMMM>>>>

I personally would never do a 6-way. The most I do is a 3-way (Tetanus, EEE, WEE), Rabies, and WNV. Each needle is used on a different body part, so any reaction (lump, etc) is able to be associated with either a single vaccine or a small combination. Do you really need Flu? Ask your vet if that's really a worthwhile vaccination for your horse. If you trail ride a lot with a wide variety of unknown horses, or travel to shows frequently, it might be worth it.

Thanks JB!! You saved the day again for me!! LOL I just ordered my 3-way (vet had recommended the flu last time we chatted about it) and a seperate shot for the flu. So my boys will be up to date by the end of the week~! Thanks for the input guys!! I think I'm going to play it better safe than sorry with my luck and spend the extra for the seperate shots!!

I regularly use a 5 way vaccine with no problems and my horses ages range from 2 yrs to 32 yrs. Our horses' and our own immune systems get challenged by mulitiple "invaders"--viruses and bacteria--on a daily basis. While everyone seems to be ******** about the use of multi-valent vaccines, unless your horses have had a reaction to them in the past you don't have to break up the vaccines. I'm glad you figured out what you were going to order and are happy with the plan. When you said you were getting a 6-way with VEE, I was pretty sure you were going to be vaccinating against something you didn't need to and I wasn't see WNV which you did need.

Ok- so new question- Vaccines have arrived and I am just being paranoid I know- I hate needles so hubby is doing the deed- but all these vaccines are done in the muscle correct? Meaning the sequence of events shoud be: Clean triangle area neck Insert needle and pull back to make sure there is no blood Admister shot Am I forgeting anything?? Whew- I know this is as simple as pie but it just makes me nervous!! Also- we are give one shot in one side of the neck and the other shot in the other side of the neck- should I wait a few days between or just do it? Thanks! Just a reminder: West Nile vaccine Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis Tetanus Toxoid In one shot And Flu in another shot.
