Knee rolls

The pony that I ride now uses a saddle that has no knee rolls, and I find it SO annoying. Is there such thing as knee rolls you can attach to a saddle temporarily?

^^ Yup! Only if the saddle has velcro under the flap for you to put some.

But really, learning to ride in a saddle without knee rolls will help cement your position. Play around with your stirrup length to see if that helps, and just remember to keep your legs back under you with your weight relaxed in your heels and your knees "loose". Use the weight of your legs and very light calf pressure to your legs in the right position. Turn those toes in and open your hips and you'll do fine! (yes, you CAN 2-point and half-seat with slightly open hips, it just takes some practice .)

I would be doing a happy dance.. I hate knee rolls. When I was looking to get a new saddle a couple years ago, I found it really nice older Pessoa, French made, with no knee rolls!
I do find riding without knee rolls really taught me how to riding with my leg in the correct position.

It has been helping me rely more on my position, you're right. I'm slowly getting better, I just find my leg slips forward much easier, even when just cantering, and I had a pretty solid leg position to begin with. I guess I'll just have to deal with it! Thanks everyone.

If your leg is slipping forward, try lengthening your stirrups a whole and making sure your knees are relaxed. I find that if I grip at all with my knees or thighs, my lower leg will swing forward. Once you've got that fixed, shorten your stirrups back up.

Even keep them longer for jumping? I find I feel even more insecure with longer stirrups. I should be gripping with my calves, right?

No, not for jumping. Just longer stirrups for flat work.

Yes, you should be gripping lightly with your calves, but letting your weight sink through your heels straight down. If you think "down to the ground" with your heel, like a magnet is pulling them directly to the ground below them, then you should be able to keep your heels down AND back at the same time. Just don't force your heels down, as that will push your stirrups forward.

Okay, thanks! It's really hard for me because I've had a bad habit of gripping with my knees and thighs, but it's been getting a lot better. I'm actually looking into buying my own saddle.
