Keeping Legs White....

I own a black and white tobiano Paint gelding who has white legs. He tends to stay pretty clean, but when he does get dirty I am able to use quic silver or cowboy magic to remove the stains, but his knees and elbows are always yellow, no matter how much scrubbing I give them. Does anyone have any tips that I could use? I have heard of people using bleach or coke...has anyone ever tried these, and if so how did they work? Also, if I were to use a product like bleach, would it irritate the skin?

Yes if you use too much. I've never owned a horse with any white... anywhere. And I like Paints, it's just the luck of the right horse. Anyways... There's an all white Appy out at the boarding stable. They bleach his legs sometimes... but try to only use quick silver. They dilute it... I think its one cup for a full five gallon bucket. Also... baby powder works for shows... as long as the judge doesn't touch it.

My horse has a while sock on his hind leg, and to keep it white, I clip it then scrub it ith quic silver shampoo until you can see his pink skin. It usually stays nice and white for a while.

Yup, clipping the stains out is great on greys. Clipper marks do not show up as much on white hair, so they grow out quicker too. Ever think of getting him knee and elbow pads?

kidding!

I have heard, but have not tried yet, that Woolite (sp) works wonders on stains. If the white on the leg goes past the knee and the hock, I would clip the leg about a week before your event. Clipping that area will make it easier to get the stain out no matter what product you decide to use. Be leary of bleach, it burns my skin.

You could also use SHOUT... It works wonders! My friend uses this on her grey mare because she always manages to pee or squirt on herself.. Yuck! Anyways.. It works really well at getting out stains!

I just used liquid blueing for the first time and it worked as predicted. A capful of liquid blueing in a 1/2 cup of shampoo. Let it set for 5 minutes and rinse. Be careful though and not leave it on too long or you can turn smurf blue for a while!

I have a "white" horse - I use Absorbine Super Poo - it is great for getting him really white and for taking the yellow pee and poop stains off his tail

Have you tried Sards wonder soap? It is meant for clothes, but if you wet the area, rub it with the sards bar of soap and let it sit in for a 2 minutes, and then wash it out throughly to avoid irritation, the stain should come out from his socks.

Guinness has 3 white feet, I just use superfine ear clippers and clip just his white stocking, stopping at the color change. Then lightly blend the dark hair in a downward motion with 1/4" shears.
