Keeping Black horses black

I have a black TWH and Saddlebred, asking the experts out there how they keep them from sunfading. They are so beautiful right now, the Saddlebred was stalled before we got him last fall and he was very black, the TWH was very black when we got him also, but he sunfaded last summer on his back. They will not be stalled or covered with a sheet, just can not do that. Feeding them BOSS hear that that will help, heard that paprika might help. What do you all think?

Is there a specific reason you can't use a protective sheet like the Kensingtons which block UVs which inturn helps prevent fading? BOSS can help, along with Paprikia (if you show, it can test positive), also Kelp. Healthy Hair's Sunflower spray is amazing, it's sunblock in liquid/spray form. Unfortunately if your horses are in constant sunlight during the spring/summer months you may be fighting quite the losing battle.

honestly without a sheet its a bit of a lost cause lol...why not use a sheet? they don't make them hot or anything they're very breathable...

you can get the HI-Black burgundy, by rio vista. it makes them turn black again, but then adds slight burgundy highlights to the coat. it makes them gorgous

I use Black As Knight. It is a supplement for blacks and bays. It takes about 2 months to see a real change. They also make a product that contains henna. It gives instant results.

Also if you are afraid of the sheet making them hot you can spray it down with a hose before you put it on them. It helps keep them cool and comfortable for awhile.

Unless you keep them stalled or cover them with a sheet there is nothing you can feed them that will stop the fading.

The best thing that I can recommend is a light sheet. That would work the best .. and it wouldn't be too hot if you were to buy one with holes. My friend's dark bay canadian t/b has the same issue. She doesn't do anything about his coat though. He just looks die dye!!
Good luck

Paprika is one of the main active ingredients in Black As Knight and Blackenall. Most people feed it at a rate of 1-3 Tbsp/day BEFORE fading starts. If you compete, though, you'll want to stop giving it about 2 weeks prior in case they test, as it can show up in tests and contains low levels of a banned substance (capsasian.. sp?)

L & R Farms

There is a product at www.angelfire.com/trek/landrfarms that helps protect against fading color.
