Keeping big dogs and little dogs together?

I've been thinking about getting a doberman puppy sometime soon. I'm supposed to be moving in three months (into a pet-friendly rent house), so that would be around when it would be feasible.

I currently have a four year old miniature poodle. She is fairly accepting of big dogs and little dogs (although she does get a little growly when they refuse to give her her space) but is a little iffy about "medium" dogs... as in dogs that are bigger than her but not MUCH bigger. They don't really fit into either of her molds, so she gives them a wide berth.

Has anyone here had any experience in keeping big dogs with little dogs? My primary concern here is that the dobe pup might accidentally hurt my little girl in play. Can't have anyone squishing my muffin (or, throws in the boyfriend, eating her)! They would be supervised almost all of the time, and put in seperate crates when I'm out of the house. They would be fed seperately too (probably in their crates) to cut down on food aggression and because they'll need such different food.

Thoughts, anyone?

Roxy is 90 pounds of...special dog. She's very hyper, loves to jump around and play. Maurice is maybe 11 pounds. Maurice does NOT let Roxy OR Suki [who is about 50 pounds] gang up on him, or do anything he doesn't want them to do.

So...we've never had a problem keeping big dogs with little dogs.

I have a 80 pound 5 y/o lab mix and a 20 pound FAT Toy Fox Terrier who is nearly blind and 13 years old. Guess who the boss is? Tonka, the TFT.

I'm not so much worried about aggression issues or dominance, more that all it would take to injure a little dog is one big pounce in play. Hmm. I don't know, maybe I'm thinking about it too much... I just want to be sure that I'm making the right decision for both dogs (current and potential).

Jenje, I think you'll find that the big dogs are pretty respectful of the little dogs...especially when the little ones are dominant. My dog, Axle, is an absolute bulldozer when it comes to property and things. But, he is afraid enough of the old girl, Mel, who is half his size, to give her a wide birth.

our little dogs(4-8 lbs) always ran around with our bigger dogs(35lbs up to 120 lbs) when we were there to supervise. If we weren't there, dogs were put in respective kennels so nothing could happen to any of them if one of the dogs got a wild hair up it's butt to use the little ones as personal squeaky toys
