Keeping a horse from rubbing out braids...

I was thinking about *possibly* braiding my horse this year, especially if we go to some bigger shows... only one problem... he LOVES to rub them out - especially at night when I'm not there to yell at him *lol* The first year that I had him, before I bought him, he had a long mane and we would french braid it, but it always seemed to fall out because it was kind of short at the base of the neck. Well, the same day that I paid for he we waltzed into his stall and pulled it The last show that I took him to that year I did scallop braids on him, but he rubbed out a bunch of them and I ended up taking them all out and restraightening his mane because it was too much of a pain to redo it all (and I didn't have enough time ) He hasn't been braided since then.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions to keep him from rubbing the braids out if I decide to do them. I have a Sleazy hood and he was wearing it when he rubbed out the braids before and it's not the hood that bothers him because he wears it at every show to keep his mane flat. I once had someone tell me to tie him to a wall when I wasn't in the stall (or near the stall) and all night, and that is WAY out of the question... I'd rather go unbraided than have a horse who's tired because it's been standing tied all night. I'm just wondering if there are any products or anything that I can use to make it so that the braids aren't so irritating. He looks fine without being braided - I just make sure to neatly pull his mane and I put some gel in it to keep the flyaways to a minimum - but it would be nice to see him all pretty and braided up

Obviously since the sleezy didn't help, I doubt it will do any good to get another one.

Get up the morning of and braid him. They will look better (even if the didn't rub during the night), and he won't have a chance to rub.

We always used to get up early to plait up. Waste of time doing them on a night if you are going to have to redo them.

never had any problems with Score rubbing his out(he's kind of a prissy gelding!! ) but we didn't finish the braid until the morning of the show, i'd braid him so that alls i'd have to do in the morning was tie them up, and trim the long strings....yea, he'd have EXTREAMLY long tails of yarn hanging off his neck, but it was worth it to me.....

You might just have to get up early and do them if nothing keeps him from rubbing them. You could just do the first braid at night and then put up the rest in the morning. That would probably keep you from having to redo all of them.

I usually do just braid down the night before and then put them all up the day of... only problem is he's not shy about rubbing them out during the day *lol* Maybe it would make a difference if he's in a stall that doesn't have an open door (where we were showing when he rubbed the braids out the stalls have dutch doors... most of the other shows have fully enclosed/barred sliding doors). When he rubbed with the Sleazy on he didn't rip it at all, so he wasn't rubbing very hard... just enough to pull some of the braids out.

Maybe I'll just forget about braiding him since all of the shows I will hopefully be going to are over 3 days and I don't look forward to redoing them all the time *LOL* but I'll try it at home first and see what he does... maybe rub some calm coat into the base, or some hydrocortizone or something And no more scallops for me with my boy... much easier to only redo a few braids than it is to have to redo a bunch

I wish he was like the mare I used to ride... she wouldn't even consider rubbing her braids... even without a Sleazy on

try this!!! after you are done, and the braids are set- try a small amount of oil at the top of each braid, it seems like when the top of his mane is drying out, it is also drying out his skin.. So he is rubbing because it itches, (kinda like when we get dry skin) SO try the oil- like a drop of baby oil- ?? and see if that helps!! and if he does it every time you braid and you only braid for the shows, then try braiding when you don't have one, and try the oil! ??? Just my thought's.. No 2 horses are ever alike!!

That's so sad. I would never tie my horse all night because he's not that kinda guy... he likes to sleep *lol* When it was suggested to me, I asked the person, how would you like to be tied up all night?? Well... I take that back about never tying a horse... we used to have an old Morgan who we used to tie at night sometimes (like when he was totally chewing the walls down, a.k.a. redecorating *lol*) but it really wasn't for more than a few hours, and they lived right over the barn and could hear everything (which is why he was tied, because his stall was right underneath a bedroom ). I definately wouldn't tie a horse if I wasn't right there to hear if anything was happening... way too dangerous! I have seen some people tie up their QHs and Paints all night long (and sometimes all day too ) at shows to make it so that their necks were tired and they carried them lower
