Keeping a black horse black...Any tips?

I have a pretty black 4 yr. old mare that I plan on showing this year for the first time. Short of keeping her in the barn, does anyone have any tips for keeping her from fading? Are there any good products with sunscreen that work? Shampoos that enhance black?...any ideas would be appreciated.

I suggest turnout at night, or a turnout sheet Also, daily grooming will help his coat shine!

Actually some top Friesian breeders use a tablespoon of Papricka. Makes a chestnut look good too.

Shines not the problem....she's fed well, groomed regularly...healthy as a horse ....I just want to keep her from fading and turnout at night is not possible.

Yeah I thought it was weird too but it worked on my poneh... I was stupid and stopped using it. I heard it works well on chestnuts and sorrels and gets them into a deep red rum color - so Im gonna try it on TJ

They do make blackening shampoo...I've tried the chestnut one on Stevey and they do enhance it better. It doesn't seem to last really long tho... kinda like cheap hair die.... lol

I haven't heard the paprika thing for blacks...and I *believe* that some shows ban it, not sure (I remember seeing a comment on another thread here)

I haven't tried Missing Link's equine formula, but I have tried their canine formula on my dogs. I have a liver/white dog who gets sun bleached in the summer and winds up with blond highlights. I started using Missing Link's equine formula and no more highlights and his coat got several shades darker. Petsmart carries it. It might be worth a try.

Just be careful if you're showing at rated shows with the peprika - it's an illegal substance, so if you go to a USEF show and they drug test, you can get DQed for the peprika. I use Deo-Lotion fly spray which has a sunscreen in it - my chestnut used to fade some - his coat would get bleached and the top layer was a lighter color - he was shiny, yet his color was kind of drab on top, nice and red underneath. After using the Deo-Lotion I've had no problems with fading! Using a turnout sheet would help as well (like a fly/scrim sheet).

turnout at night would be best, but since thats not possible, i suggest a light turnout sheet. Also, turn him out after noon, when the suns strength is fading. )
