I just wonder how many horses have survived a c-section?

Ask your vet. Also (this isn't to scare you) I wonder if cutting into the necrotic and infected tissue and exposing it to her blood/healthy tissue on the way out will put her at more risk? I would just ask the vet any questions you might have.

He did say when he called the university that they have only seen 3 or 4 cases like hers where a c-section was performed and all the horses lived. But I'm guessing there has been more than 3 or 4 horses that have had c-sections. There is a risk of the infection getting into her healthy blood and tissue. He is hoping that the uterus doesn't bust open till it is outside the horse. But they will be flushing her insides just in case.

I was wondering if they would do a c-section on her , honestly I can't believe your mare has come this far, shows she's a real fighter. Sending good thoughts her way for a good surgery.

I can't imagine what you must be going through, your as strong as your horsie thats for sure.

Good luck today .

Poor Katy Lynn. I'm so sorry. Sending warm thoughts and prayers.

I found this article on Cesarean Sections: Caesarean Sections - TheHorse.com It's an older article, but can give some information. It looks like the foals don't always survive, but it seems like most of the time the mare comes through well.

Big hugs, warm thoughts, and prayers for you and Katy. She's a strong girl and she has lots of people supporting her; I have faith she will come through this.

Will they be performing a spay on her? I guess that's what you mean by uterus coming out. I would think that would be the only logical way to do it to keep infection from getting inside the body. I don't know anything though, just speculating and wondering. It's something my mom brought up when she came to watch the kids for me.
