Jumping!!!

Hay everybody...

Navara and i recently started jumping again...

We did Flat work for about 3 months now because she was kind of unsound on her Right reign and we wanted her to forget about all her polo playing... but it is better now and the vet said there is nothing wrong with her... she is a really great jumper and she enjoy's it to..

but this is my question..

she sometimes turns out infront of the jump... my instructor says it is only because she is still young... what can i do to learn her not to do it or to prevent it from happening...

Thanks in advance

Running out is basically a steering problem. If your horse is running out, then you are not solid enough in your seat, leg, and hands. Basically, you want your horse to have only one "door" open to her: forward.

Your trainer should be able to help you with this. Your horse should not be running out just because she is young- if that is all your trainer says I would get a new trainer.

Need more info:

How long was she a polo pony and how long ago was that? 3 months for a newly-ex pp isn't very long at all.

Running out is a rider error. Its roots are generally in the fact that the horse is not forward off your leg (not the same as fast ) and is not *between* your aids, ie responding equally to left and right rein and leg.

You said she was "unsound on the right rein" - what exactly does that mean? Was she actually unsound, as in, not sound, going to the right, or does it mean she wasn't very supple/responsive in that direction? Either way, that right there could be play a huge role in this current issue.

How are you setting your jumps up? You *must* set things up so there is no option to run out. If this means placing another set of standards perpendicular to the jump, so that you have another "jump" on either side, making it physically impossible to run out without crashing through one of the jumps, then that's what you do. That might end up bringing out a stopping issue, in which case you really look to physical issues and/or rider issues.

Great point! 90 - 99% of mistakes that happen are rider error. Faults, refusals, poor distances, poor striding, veers, etc, etc, etc.
