Hay and Equipment

Posted 09-08-2006 at 09:13 PM by Super Step
We planned to cut hay Wednesday afternoon. My son and I each were hooked to the mower/conditioners. We made 2 rounds and mine began to make a strange noise. I stopped to check it out and the blade bushing was shot.
I really hated this because it left only one mower, the smaller 7 footer to cut with.
He made a round by himself and pulled down to where I was stopped. He has spun the same bushing. His had just been replaced and this was the first cutting since. But the nut came off and...

Blades and Boxers

Posted 09-02-2006 at 10:28 PM by Super Step
I finished spraying the pastures today. I now have a strange looking plant that comes up in August. I am pretty sure some of the sale barn calves brought it in a few years ago. I almost have it all wiped out now.
I had Army Worms (http://www.thegardenhelper.com/armyworm.html) two years ago and they really put the hurt on my best hay field. It is recovering well now. But I cringe at putting fertilizer on a fields at $300 per ton just to bring the grass back. All part of life on the farm....

Vacation

Posted 07-26-2006 at 07:22 PM by Super Step
It looks like I am going on a vacation next week.
Probably to Pigeon Forge/Cades Cove.
Kandee finally has a few days off in a row and wants to go somewhere. She needs the break.

My summer break is almost over now. I still have some projects to finish.
We need rain. I have a cousin who is a commercial hay producer. That is his main source of income. He baled a field that normally yeilds 150 rolls and got 36.
The problem some do not see other than the short supply...

Hard Wood Floors

Posted 07-21-2006 at 09:06 PM by Super Step
I was trying to do some things at Dad's place this evening and broke an outside hydrant. I was going to repair it tonight, but he told me to wait until the morning. I guess he will be alright with his water turned off tonight.

I have been looking at hardwood flooring online, getting some ideas of what I want to make for our house. I do not know whether to make the wide boards, or the narrow ones.
Kandee went with me today to look at what kind of hardwood trees we have on...

Sawmill/Feed Room

Posted 07-15-2006 at 09:06 PM by Super Step
I have discovered that I love to run the sawmill, make lumber from logs. The new edger saves so much time, make things move along so well.
Today I finished putting pine floors in the feed and tack rooms. I wish I had taken pictures before I put everything back in. The boards still need to cure some and will shrink, so the are not nailed down yet, but pulled tight with the end boards screwed down. I will tighten them every week until they cure. I do no have the new molding machine set up yet...
