Little Cody meets the herd

Posted 11-07-2009 at 03:53 PM by OzCowgirl
Well after 5 days of no pooping, she finally produced something! It was a huge relief for all of us. So she went into the paddock with me when the other horses were only a fenceline apart. I was really nervous and protective of her. I wasn't sure how they were going to react. But since I had been putting horses into the stall next to her and she seemed scared of them, it was time to show her she is a horse, and not to be afraid of them, or the noises, sounds and footfalls of other equines.

Still not pooping

Well since the enema she hasn't pooped at all. I'm worried so I called the vet to come out again and take a look.

She seems happy enough, and has gained a lot of weight. She runs and bucks around the paddock each morning and afternoon and is nibbling on grass. So I am not sure what is happening.

On foalcam last night I saw she slept standing up for a fair amount of time, and pawed the ground every once in a while. maybe it's the new fresh clean bedding straw she doesn't...

First day in paddock!

Little Cody followed me into the paddock yesterday - the paddock she was born in. She really needed the turnout and ran around like a mad horse possessed. After wearing herself out, she dropped and had a long sleep.

She has started nibbling grass, more like chewing the tops of the seed heads and young shoots, with my encouragement and seems to enjoy her days in the sun.

First enema...

Day 2 and we have scours and dehydration! The vet came out at about 7.30pm and gave her an enema with that green peppermint smelling pasty liquid... she handled it OK considering there were three of us holding her pinned against the wall of the stable. She actually started going to sleep because I could see her eyes closing. I was talking gently to her.

About 10 minutes later out it came! It was only a few little balls. There was no real blockage but she had hardly anything "up...

The reason...

The Impact Colostrum I had came to good use today. I tried giving it to her by bottle, but she wouldn't take it, so I grabbed an empty supplement bucket and put the colostrum into it.

Within 5 minutes of gulping, sloshing, licking and head-bumping, she had the technique down and sucked up the whole 300mL in about 2 minutes. Aren't foals supposed to not know how to do this until they are a few days old? No problem for this little one. A few hours later she had her second dose....
