Legacy

The molten power seethes and flows unbidden,
fire streams from cell to blood in sullen
waves, impatient to be freed to move
from heart and lungs to heaving chest and hooves;
the wild addicting joy of body surging,
piston legs revolving, senses purging,
burning thought from burdened brain until
no thought remains. I do not think, but feel
the supple leather caught in hand, the rippled,
molded flesh controlled beneath the saddle.
I feel the heavy breath pulled in and out
from sky to lungs through nostril flared and taut,
the pounding breath betrays the power bound
by subtle hands and softly soothing sound
and then we stop with muscles trembling, straining
to feel the speed again. With light fast fading
disappointment swells; but for her good
we step inside the barn where rest and food
now wait. I smooth her burnished coat and think
how Andalusians past were groomed by kings.
