Katy Lynn in clinic

Posted 03-02-2007 at 02:25 PM by katylynn06
Took Katy to the equine clinic in West Plaines yesterday. The vet wasn't there yet but the techs got her in the stanchins (sp) and took her temp, no fever. Then they started pumping fluids in her as she was dehydrated. They did tell me b/c of the seriousness of her condition they could not guarantee the life of the mare. But they would do everything they can to save her and what is best for her. The vet came in and said she looked healthy for a horse who has been through what she has been through. He checked her and said that her cervix was not dialated and it doesn't appear that it ever was, which is a good sign, she had no udder development which is another good sign, and her uterus was still intact another good sign. So they were going to give her fluids to rehydrate her and to fill her uterus so it didn't start attaching it self to the foal. Then they were going to give her a shot to relax her so the cervix could dialate, lots of anibiotics and pain medicine so she could be more comfortable. Again he said she looks to be in good health bright eyed and alert and no fever which are all good signs. He said he would have to wait till today to remove the foal so the relaxer has a chance to work. As Katy was standing in the stanchins (sp) they hadn't even given her any drugs yet and she was falling asleep. The vet techs were very nice they treated her like one of their own and it was comforting to know she was in a good place.
