Future

Future is a mare that belongs to my barn owner, one of the many she breed from her stallion. Future and her sister Kyaira are IMHO the worst two of the bunch. They are both almost wild, no ground manners, and both give the farrier , the Vet and myself a run for our money.
A week ago Sunday , she slipped and fell, and her hind leg went under the run in shed, she almost cut her hoof off at the coronet band, we have no idea what time this happened, sometime late Sunday night we think, and the cold temps helped her coagulate, altho there was a great deal of blood lost
The vet managed to sew her back together, but she broke those stiches,of course, and is so tattered, but he managed to get another set in, and at my begging did use a bit of glue, since we can not irrigate this wound anyway, due to it's severity. She is on bute and an broad spectrum antibiotic, and seems to be doing fine. But I do not like the smell that is coming from the wound, I have been doing the night dressing, and the BOs grand daughter the day, she is excellent at this, so I do not think it is her.
I honestly feel she cut so many nerves that it does not pain her.
What is remarkable is the change in her behaviour, last night when I finished her up, she has been standing quietly, so I have been doing this in her stall. Amazing really since I have to twitch her for just about everything else. She just laid her head against me, and sighed, like they do when they seem to know you are helping them. It just tore at my heart.
I do not want this mare to lose her fight, she has a forever home no matter what. She is not dopey or out of it, she is just a different horse! I have not talked about this to anyone, not even Nick, until last night, when I spoke of this to a member here, as it brings me to tears to do so. I only talk to the other girl on the phone as I go at night and she is gone, and the BO is torn up about it, thinking the shed was at fault.
Some horses just find ways to get hurt, Future is one of them, she is stubborn, and can be a real pain in the behind. But when push comes to shove, she has been as good as any horse could be. I know wounds like this can heal, I just do not like that smell. I left the Vet a note, he is coming tomorro to take a look at her. If you read this, and you have a moment, give Future a good thought, send her strength to make it, please
Suddenly, this mare has stolen my heart.
