Arwen: Watch right hind leg for being lazy. Use spiral in and out to get right hind under. Use voice in upward transitions to make cleaner, if needed. Don’t worry about what the head is doing…if she gets flippy, it means she is not moving forward so use the stick and go to the hind end. Remember to stretch left side.

When she feels fussy on the bit, it means her neck is not long enough and she feels restricted. Lengthen the neck and she settles better. Don’t rush the trot!

Fussy in the corners (spooking), so from the short side, leg yield to F or K, track INTO the corner, change the bend, leg yield, etc.

At sitting trot, ½ circle from E or B, back to corner, turn the line into a leg yield around the quarter line.

Bella: Extended walk—do lengthen the reins a little. Must extend entire frame without going very much downward. Collect walk is however much collection it takes to do a turn on the haunches.

For warm up, make LOTS of transitions (on straight lines) with her long and stretching into the hand. W, T, W, T, W, T, C, T, C, T, etc.

For shoulder in and half pass at walk and trot, make sure the outside leg is anchored. Half pass right at the walk, halt, then have the feeling that you could walk forward in HAUNCHES in from the halt. Remember to keep bringing the shoulders around to start the half pass. If the shoulders start to not come around, go into a volte, then continue the half pass.

Canter half pass: She said one of several things was happening. Either I was not opening enough with the inside rein, I was not bringing MY body around enough like in a volte, or I was blocking with the outside rein and not allowing her to come around. Was a combination of all three… Really open inside rein (it’s not as much as I think it is), Really bring my body around, then with the outside rein allow her to bend, use outside rein in half halts to keep hind anchored, but not holding and blocking with the outside rein.

Chessie: Wobbly over legs, go to straight shoulder in to fix. Lots of trot voltes, make sure I don’t start them too early, then keep bringing the shoulders around and LOTS of active inside leg, esp. going to the right.

Counter canter is better… if she’s not going back to track easily, look over outside shoulder. Remember to keep my body back!!!

Trot lengthenings—take them from several different exercises. From leg yield to ½ volte, from Renvers, from Shoulder in, and on the circle. From the circling exercise, spiral in, leg yield out, and at the end of leg yield push for lengthen. Don’t forget to push the neck long at all times.
