First Day on the Job

Am I strange to feel guilty for profiting from the careless rich?
After a day (10.5 hours) on the job, I'm pretty sure I nabbed a pretty swell summer job. I don't have supervisors, I have my own cash float, my own inventory, and I do my own thing all day. I load up my cart, and then for the rest of the day drive around the course, stopping for people who want something to drink. Then when I get sick of driving, I stop the cart at a junction and sit there, in the sun, reading my book, until people come by and want something.
Did I mention the tips?? Yes, the tips are outrageous. To me, at least, who has never done a tipping job before. I made $85 in tips plus my wage, for doing next to nothing! I just sit there and smile, hand out a beer, then go back to reading my book.
I feel guilty for it. I feel like a hypocrite for becoming involved in this "high society" that I have condemned for so long. I feel dirty for profiting from this. I am used to working for a wage, I'm used to slaving away like a true slave for $12/hour, sweating, getting dirty, never coming to the end of the work but always finding more of it, stretched out, never getting done because there just aren't enough hours in the day. Now I sit here and get hit on by 50 y/o men. Hmm.

| | Re: First Day on the JobGlad your first day went well. I did the whole waitressing thing last summer, so I can't really say much about how that's bad! I really did work my hiney off though and was dead exhausted by the end, so I suppose it's a bit different. There were days when I'd make $150 + in tips over a 5 or 6 hour shift. Not too shabby.... |
