Bossy had her calf

Bossy, the Jersey cow my son bought this past spring to raise calves on, delivered her AI calf Saturday. The dairy owner's wife gave me the wrong cow when I went to pick her up. (Culls do not give 60 lbs a day
) I buy his culls. Bossy was one of his best cows, AI bred to one of the top bulls in the US. I told the owner I would bring her back, he said a deal was a deal but he would be interested in the calf if it was a heifer.
I told him we would give him the calf free since we were given a good cow.
She had a bull calf. He is big. To big. Bossy became weak last night. I hoped it was just stress from the big baby.
She was dead when I went to the barn this morning. I now believe she was weak last night from internal bleeding. Bossy was a good cow, friendly, affectionate. She loved that baby. It was the first one she had ever been allowed to keep as dairy calves are immediately taken away and bottle fed. I petted her her last night as she licked her calf. She then began to lick my arm. Kandee asked why she was also licking me. I told her Bossy was thanking me for not taking her baby away.
I am trying to buy another cow and have the baby with Bessy, who is already nursing her calf and 2 others. Bess can't feed 4 and I do not like to mix feeding with powder and real milk.
I was driving the loader/backhoe to the little wildlife area to bury Bossy and I saw 2 deer. They were not afraid, just watched me. I have only seen 2 other wild deer on our property. One of them was years ago. That was neat to see wild deer not 30 feet away eating honeysuckle.
I am going to begin putting feed out to try and keep them close.
I really hate losing Bossy. She had personality, was a good cow.

| | Re: Bossy had her calfSorry to hear about Bossy--I hope you can find another nurse cow. Every time you talk about how rare wild deer are in your area I find it hard to wrap my head around because they are so common here. |

| | Re: Bossy had her calfHow sad Tim. I am sorry she is gone. Cows can be such gentle yet fierce creatures. I think they protect the young much better than a mare does. My sympathy about Bossy. |
