Bad Fall

I now have the dubious honor of saying Jake and I had our first accident. I went out to see him and fit him for the fleece cooler I'm making for him. That took long enough that I didn't want to go for a real ride, so I decided to just hop on and ride bareback for a couple minutes. It was really muddy, but I couldn't ride in the arena because they had a (very) pregnant mare turned out in there, and I didn't want to disturb her. I figured the lane running in front of the stable would be dry, so I walked Jake out front. I was feeling good, so I asked Jake for a lope, thinking in my head that since the footing was good, it would be nice to take a short jog down the lane. Unfortunately, Jake was feeling frisky, and when he saw the long, open stretch in front of him and heard my cue to run, he ran. I was concentrating so hard on keeping my balance that I couldn't get the leverage to pull him to a stop. I couldn't do a one-rein stop because the lane is lined with barbed-wire, and the last thing I wanted him to do was run through a barbed-wire fence.
When we reached a cross street, Jake decided he wanted to turn onto it. We were going too fast to make the turn, and Jake slipped on the gravel. We both went down, and he landed on my right leg. He immediately got up and started grazing on somebody's lawn and I got up right after, but had to stop and put my hands on my knees for a second because I was shaking so hard. I didn't want him to wander off, though, so I forced myself up and grabbed his reins. I love that he isn't hard to catch, because I would never have been able to chase after him if he had decided to take off.
Jake was fine; he just grazed the hair and a little skin off his shoulder and hip. I didn't break anything, but I face-planted in the gravel, so I got some pretty serious road burn on my face, and it was swollen for several days. A small piece of gravel gouged a hole in my left palm, and my left knee got scraped up. The worst damage happened to my right leg. My leg was swollen and scraped up from knee to ankle, and it hurt to walk on. I walked Jake back to the stable and some girls there put some ointment on Jake's scratches while I cleaned myself up. I put Jake away then drove to an Instacare just to make sure I hadn't broken anything.
It's been two weeks now, and my face and hand are pretty much healed. My knees are still scabbed up, and my right leg is still in technicolor, but the swelling is gone. I still have a hard, numb lump just below and to the left of my knee, but the doctor said it could take up to a year to get all the feeling back into that spot.
I am LDS, so my husband gave me a Priesthood Blessing the night of my accident. I was told that angels had protected me and kept the accident from being as bad as it could have been. I guess that's one good thing that came from this. How often are you told you have been saved by angels? Even with that though, I'm glad I got a riding helmet for Christmas and that I was wearing it. I don't want to know what would have happened it I hadn't. Scary.
