Images: 22 ![]() ![]() | Jordan's Check-up Bad news****Good News Update**** ***So we talked to the vet this morning and he passed the blockage and he is feeling GREAT!!!! We were going to leave him there tonight since we have gotten 2+inches of amazing rain and our driveway is a mud hole and of course our truck is 2 wheel drive. Hubby got the pickup and trailer out alright though and Jordan is on his way home.*** So my Corgi got kicked by our pony yesterday so I took her to the vet to get her leg checked out, yep broke it, and all the bones in her foot. So I asked them if I could bring Jordan in for a check up when I picked her up today. So they sqeezed us in. Well, she checked him over and then he coliced. So yeah, he is staying overnight tonight. I may need a stretcher when I get the bill for the dog and Jordan. Here is a brief synopsis of what she said about him. She said that the old wire injury is probably going to bother him. I knew that but good to confirm. Also that the slight swelling in his rear ankles could be some fusing in the joints. That race horses frequently get small hairline fractures. The bodies natural healing is to fuse the bones together. She concurred on the Pancur PowerPac for him, said I can do it with them for $100'ish. Anyone know where to get it cheaper? Thirdly she made some suggestions for diet. I don't totally agree on it though. She recommended Senior Feed with a Fat Supplement. Last edited by SunRock Sage; 05-10-2008 at 02:20 PM. | Senior Member+ | I hope both of your babies are feeling better soon! I think your Corgi will be a little more careful around the horses from now on... My dogs love our horses and they've had a few close calls now. I can't keep them away though. I've never heard of Pancur PowerPac... but I do know countrysupply.com has good deals on a lot of stuff. Wouldn't hurt to check it out or even call them and ask if they carry it.

![]() | valleyvet.com has the panacur powerpac for 54.95 for 5-57gm tubes or 51.95 for 12-5 packs. |

| Senior Member+ | Why don't you agree with the diet? It would honestly be better than what he's currently getting even if it's one of the 'lower' quality senior feeds out there. It's not the diet I would recommend (dependant upon brands you can get), but again, definately not the worst. Again, as you know, I disagree with the powerpak. And $100 is beyond ridiculous, unless you're doing 2 horses.. |

Images: 22 ![]() ![]() | Thanks Dawn for the advice and thoughts. We are kinda in a wait and see for ordering wormer. Today at around 12:30 CST the vet tubed him and when we spoke with her at 5:30pm CST he hadn't passed the mineral oil yet. So she is going to keep an eye on him and put in a catheter and give him some fluids and see from there. If nothing had changed pretty soon. We haven't heard from her again so assuming that all is alright for now. I will update as we hear more. |

| Senior Member+ | I would steer way clear of a Powerpac for a horse that is having trouble with colic. You already have abdominal pain so why intentionally add inflammation adn ulceration? A tactful way to approach this with your vet would be to ask why they would want to give a Powerpac when it's been shown to cause GI inflammation. It's very possible that your vet hasn't seen this study--heck, lots of strictly equine vets haven't.

Images: 22 ![]() ![]() | Yet again in my hurry I wasn't totally clear. We will wait to do ANY worming until he is better and we will evaluate then. I called them to make sure that there wouldn't be any worming. Ok, now an update. So he is still there and has been on IV fluids for 48 hours now. The vet said that she has never seen this and neither has any of the others in the same office. When they have done a rectal palpation his colon is totally full of "softer" stool followed by whatever is HARD. I guess he has stopped pooping all together now. When we took him in he was still pooping normal stools with good color and consistency. Our vet said that if she had to make a guess he is terribly dehydrated and has been since we got him and that he never got rehydrated even though he has had access to clean water all the time at our house. So we are waiting to hear from them this morning, it's 7:30am and they don't open until 8:00am and don't usually make calls until 9:00am soooo.... This is soooo hard. We want to do what Jordan needs but the cost is amazing. We haven't heard the total but I can imagine. At the same time when we have gone this far.... The vets said that they would just keep pumping the fluids into him, he has had 25 liters as of 6:00pm yesterday. They said to totally rehydrate a horse they have to get 10% of their body weight. So for him it would be around 100 liters. She also said that they have NEVER had to take it that far, they give fluids until things start moving again. So we are praying HARD that he started pooping last night. The kids, 4,4,3 and 2, all prayed that Jordan would poop and that his body would be healed. It was cute. Sometimes my mouth just hangs open in amazement at the things they think of. So that's that for now. |

| Senior Member+ | Good luck! And what you are describing isn't too off the wall, we've had a mare come in that was not drinking enough for a couplel of weeks after the owner treated her well and the mare had slowly impacted. She had still been passing normal consistency stools but there had been some that was harder that just kept building up in the GI tract until it caused a full impaction. As far as not giving lots of fluids, that should really be routine with any dehydrated colic case. We never gave less than 25-30 liters to one that was seriously impacted and dehydrated.

Images: 22 ![]() ![]() | Do you guys think that he may have slowed down with his weight gain if because of this colic? As in possibly this has been a buildup over the 5 weeks that we have had him. If he is uncomfortable then he won't eat right or gain well. Is that correct? |
