John Lyons vs. Monty Roberts

What are the primary differences between John Lyons training methods and Monty Roberts's? I have researched John Lyons, but haven't read any of his books. From what I've been able to find out however, it seems like his training methods attempt to justify slightly violent reactions to repeated disobedient behavior on the part of the horse. By violent, I simply mean snapping him with a rope on his hindquarters if he refuses to move etc...etc... I don't think that that is excessively painful for the horse, but at the same time, it seems like it would process it as an attempt to menace it's safety and security...what are your opinions?

I have read a book from Lyons and I have never found him "violent". You have to use pressure on a horse to teach them to move away from it, it's pretty simple. Slinging a rope at the does NOT hurt them.

I'm a big John Lyons fan. I don't think his style is so much 'violent'. I have some of his books, and he is honestly very similar to Clinton Anderson. JMO. But, I may be a bit biased.

I personally appreciate the fact that John Lyons is a Christian and uses his training clinics to witness to people

Not a Monty or Lyons fan, or a fan of NH in general....but I don't see a spank on the butt as menacing a horse's safety or security. I see it as a wake up call. Alpha mares in the wild give herd members "wake up" calls all the time when a certain behavior is exhibited; same thing with domesticated horses. With horses, kindness is certainly the best route....but appropriate discipline is also part of the equation.

I own John Lyons book 'Bringing Up Baby' and I LOVE it and the information in it But as I have said a million times, I read information from various trainers and take from it what I can and piece it together to form my own methods that work for me and my horses. I like Lyons, Anderson, Cox, Westfall, Dunning, Roberts, Parelli... they have have different things to offer.

Not into NH in general, but I'd definitely take Lyons over Roberts. Not sure where anyone would get anything remotely close to "violence" from his writings...but then again, I'm a firm believer in "come to Jesus meetings" when the situation warrants it (and no, I'm not referring to anything actually concerning religion! lol)

I don't think either Lyons OR Roberts are the best trainers for competition minded people...Their programs just don't seem geared that direction.

Er, well, one's a wingnut and the other isn't... but I'm not sure how helpful that is?

*quietly puts on Lyons hat, goes to sit beside Cindy*
