I am really sorry if I came across as argumentative and unappreciative of what other people were saying. I have really learned a lot about other people's opinions, and hope you won't feel like I trampled too hard on anyone. I hope to learn a lot about horse related things in future from all of you...

Monty Roberts books are all very whimsical.
Not exactly a word you want associated with a horse trainer.

I don't want to say much regarding the religion in a horse clinic EXCEPT I'd find it similar to if I paid for a David Bowie concert and for half the concert, had to listen to Hilary Duff.
It would be like pouring sour milk into fresh milk.

Okay, now that I'm done laughing.

I like and dislike both.

Monty Roberts: I've used his join-up technique before and it DID help with a very difficult horse and has with quite a few since then. However, I think to some extent what he does is wrong although certainly not different than many others. He took an idea that has been around for ages and made it 'his', as if he invented it. What he really did was just try to find a way to market the 'language of equus'. That being said, some of the things that he achieves during his clinics are 'the cowboy way' albeit gentler BUT he makes things that are somewhat common sense appear to be 'magical' and they're not, except to the uneducated eye. However, that being said, I have seen him take a horse that I KNEW PERSONALLY who had been COMPLETELY unhandled other than being taught to lead and load, and have that horse riding in 30 minutes. It was not an easy horse either and as far as I know he went on to be a great riding horse. The thing that I think differs most between the two is Monty's techniques are a basis for communication. There's really nothing beyond that as far as training goes.

John Lyons: I have always loved, and still refer to on a frequent basis, a lot of his exercises, his theories etc. What I don't like about him is he can be quite monotone in his presentation of things, then again, if I repeated myself over and over for years I might be too LOL. Some of his exercises I like, some I don't BUT I will say all that I have used have always been effective no matter the horse and I do like his three rules. 1) I must not get hurt 2) The horse must not get hurt 3) We must be calmer/better off when we're finished then when we began.

Another great horseman/trainer no one mentions much, who reminds me somewhat of JL, is Mark Rashid. LOVE LOVE LOVE his books...anyone else?

Wow...did this thread take an interesting turn. If I went to a clinic and the clinician started talking religion (instead of horses), I would walk out. Im sorry but church is the place for that (this coming from a person who's mother was a minister).

I agree....if I want a sermon...I would go to church...it is a two way street...those who are christian should have the respect not to put their beleifs on others...especially at a clinic where people are paying for training....if you want to thank God for your talent...do it in your personal prayers or at the end of the clinic like they do with the Oscar speeches...but in no way should it be forced onto people who have come to you for horse training/knowledge.

The only time I would find it acceptable is if it was a Christian Clinic by a person...than....far warning and do not go if you are not religious.

Neither do anything for me...but Roberts....I have seen him in person...and the clinic was a scam...."unhandles" horse not only had shoes on...he knew how to tie.

Okay that I can agree with... saving until the end of the clinic would be a GREAT idea that way people who don't want to hear it can leave I think that would be perfect
