Jazz's training update *pictures and videos*

Finally got some videos up! OK, so I'm having A LOT of trouble with that darn inside shoulder. Besides that, have we improved a bit? In part 2 during our lope transition he picks up the wrong lead (my fault) and he sort of stumbles and changes onto the correct lead. Just so you guys don't think his transitions usually look like that

In this video I have a small clip of him counter cantering before the camera died the other day

and some jog/lope/walk/back up to the left. I don't have a lot of back up this time. My mom was tired of filming.

I know I'm stilling leaning or dropping my shoulder or whatever, and he is still on the forehand, but is there any sort of improvement? It's really hard to get him off his forehand, there's just something about his trot.
BTW the videos are slowed down to go with the song.
There are some times where I have too much contact or he tries to duck behind the vertical, but I just push him with my calfs a little harder and keep my hands still and he gets the point.

here's the one where he stumbles at the transition. I forgot to ask with my outside leg and just sort of shifted my seat to get him to go into a lope, which usually works if I use my outside leg too because he's starting to depend on that leg to know which lead to take. Which is what I want.

any help is appreciate, pictures will be up tonight when I gte back from work.

looks like I dropped my shoulder here, but he looks so good

tiny jog/stop transition. The dirt is just awesome in the ring lately so I've been incorperating a few jog/stops every now and then to test if he is in-tune mentally, and every time he has stopped dead. He's learning to stop when I whisper woah, so soon I will starting asking him with just my seat and legs.

But as you can see in my picture, I was keeping my hands soft with a bit of contact to help him so he was pretty responsive. I'm not tipped to the left that much haha it's just the angle of the shot.

letting him stretch out, he's really starting to reach down for the bit by himself now.

this is the part of the stride that always makes him look on the forehand

side pass, I love his expression in this one, he looks really careful and really listening to me.

his new booties

In the first couple pics, your hands are way too high-there should be a straight line from your elbow-hand-bit.
Also, it looks like your riding on the cantle, not in the seat-put your 'seat' in the seat'
And he looks 'on the forehand' because he is on the forehand in that pic.
Try doing some 'half halts'...first trot/halt him several times-using your seat to PUSH him into the bit. make him halt. Once he's doing that well, then 'ask for the halt, but just before he does-make him go, do this several times, it will keep him on his haunches better.

How's the wither clearance on that saddle? It looks very tipped down and almost like it might be sitting on him a bit. All of that will cause for bad movement that isn't fair to judge the horse by.

Just curious as I am not a reiner, it's been several years since I've ridden a reiner, and I've never had a lot of professional instruction in reining....is there a reason that you're like sitting on top of the cantle?

He's not breaking at the poll in some of the photos but rather further back (I can't view the videos on here unfortunately). I'd be curious if he's doing that in the video, or if the photos were just catching bad moments in time.

All in all, he looks much better than some pics/video I recall seeing some time ago. (No clue how long, at least a year or more I'd say.)

I can speak for her for this one. She's doing an exercise where she picks her hands up and drives the horse forward, that's why her hands are too high, because she schooling him in those photos

Shouldn't that be like a 'catch and release' type of thing though? Or were all of these photos just taken at the 'right' time?

(Sorry if I'm being annoying, I'm just curious. I boarded with a reiner for awhile (training and schooling young horses) and I never saw her do anything like this. I find it interesting how training styles differ in every discipline.)
