| Senior Member | Dont you just love it when your horse spooks? How easy is it for you to stay on during a spook at say a walk? trot? canter? If your horse spooks do you lean one way or another? Duck to the shoulder? Stiffen up? So far Ive ridden Poco every day since I've moved her and she has spooked twice. Man these were big spooks too no tiny small jumps either, Its like her legs turned into spring boards and her *** sprouted a rocket. Ever been riding your horse calmly and leisurely then suddenly finding your horse missing out from under you by 50%-100%? I'm going to be honest I like it when she spooks. It shows her reaction time is damned good, and that I can sit it and stay on easily even at high speeds. 1st spook of the week was about 3 days ago maybe? headed down the road then all of a sudden in broad day light the stump behind the fence turned into the Gargoyle From **** (with the aid of a dozen birds of course) That spook, of the two she has had so far was the... easiest I dare say to stay on she only went about 5-8ft to the left in one jump and trotted and snorted and we were only walking. Normally she jumps in place a little bit, blows then moves on.Oddly enough after that the Gargoyle From **** turned out not to be so bad afterwards and hasn't so much as twitched in its direction since. That spook wasn't so bad either due to the fact i semi expected it, but still it was a large one and it counts so there. The second one now (happened today). Man oh man what a spook that one was. It started off simply enough. I was riding in that hay field (I posted about it yesterday i believe) Going along nicely at the edge at the trot, I had just hung up the phone about maybe a minute or so before (Mom wanted me to pick up dinner) We were trotting along briskly and had just entered into the canter when all of a sudden The evilest monster in the world know as Bovine Equine Eatus (Horse Eating Cow) suddenly materialized out of thin air (aka was standing there in plain sight) Poco doesn't jump, she leaps to the right (easily clearing the distance of the first spook with a few extra feet to spare) like a plane taking off from the obvious danger the Bovine Equine Eatus posed. I of course wasn't paying attention, but dealing with this mare for over 2 years with one major mishap sure as **** didn't leave me completely negligent in my reaction. Did I stay on? Obviously other wise I wouldn't have been able to walk to the computer to type this post. I admit to being a ducker in response to spooking. It lowers my center of gravity. I ducked to the left as she spooked to the right and begin to turn her head in. I have her back under control in a matter of seconds. But then again any situation like that is over in a matter of seconds especially when happening at the canter. I face her towards the evil Bovine Equine Eatus. It stares at us, spooks itself and runs for it as the rest of its kind laugh at its failure. Then I notice as I look down... I lost my **** stirrup! I'm not sure when it happened but I did, wound up loosing my right stirrup... oh well, I didn't notice no harm done. hahaha. After that spook everything went merrily on and we continued our ride. Man who would ahve know so many monsters were present!

| Senior Member | To funny! My horse usually will dead stop, front legs alittle apart, white of her eye showing. I have only had her take off on me once, I lost both my stirrups as I was not expecting this because we were about 200 feet from the gate of the barn, she spooked at the barn dog she has seen for the last 4 years of her life! About a week ago she saved me from the death jaws of wild bunny!!! Oh yeah, a bird shadow and the sound of a dried leaf being cut by clippers. When she took off on me I have to say that after I was thrilled. I found it kind of fun, but man can that horse move out quick! I guess that is why she was a sprinter! |

| Senior Member | Poco has yet to do any kind of spook towards dogs, she will go after dogs if i encourage her to. Man that is fun run doggie run! wont spook at bags or anything. usually her spooks are small jumps in place and thats it. I wonder where that memo got lost.

| Senior Member+ | Try riding a young, green, INSANE welsh pony! She spooks constantly The thing is, I never know what's going to scare her... the bucket near our arena that she's walked by a zillion times suddenly became a monster once and she absolutely FLIPPED out. I could cover her in a tarp and she wouldn't care, though.Silly pony... sometimes I think she isn't really scared of anything, just wants to test me!
