It's about that time..

to start changing the horses scheduals and bringing them in during the day and turn them out at night!

just a few questions..

What time should i bring in and then turn out?
what is a good UV protectant fly sheet to get?..any brands?
And what kind of human sunscreen is the safest and most effective to use?

thanks.

we bring our horses in to feed in the morning, and time can vary but usually between 7-10am a few hours in the morning sun wont do anything... then at night we turn out after they have been fed between 5-9pm. we obviously dont have a strict schedule lol.

as for fly sheets i have a wetherbeeta that ive had for a few years and has held up nicely. and i like banana boat boat sunscreen spf45 or so.

(Summer Schedule) Ours come in at 6AM, eat and are in the stalls all day, get turned out at 6:30PM. It's like that almost exactly every day - my BO is a bit obsessive!

We don't use any kind of sheets or sunscreen at our barn, so I can't help you there!

I go with the sun....if my mare is turned out in the paddock that does not have a run-in shed, she has to come in as soon as the sun starts to lighten up the sky...some times as early as 5:30 am....she will stand in the barn most of the day, only going out to drink and grab a few mouth fulls of grass, I don't feed in the evenings till around 8 pm...by then the flys are not as bad, and the sun is going down...

If you are turning them out at night why would you need a sheet or sunscreen? (sorry, i'm a bit confused.)

My barn leaves them out during the day. The bugs are too bad but I still put on a flysheet and bugspray. I just have one from Greenhawk and its my first year using it. I might not once it gets really warm though because he tends to sweat when its on if its too hot. Im not too sure about this one though because its a bit different.
I have actually thought about asking the BO if he can come in during the day and out at night instead. He might think im crazy though

If you're worried about bleaching, just turn them out at night. Keep them in the barn during the day, and at dusk turn them out. You don't have to worry about the sun being up the next day, since morning sun is pretty weak. They'll adjust to the schedule.
Other than that, some flysheets have UV protecting stuff sprayed on them.
As for sunscreen, I'd personally grab a big bottle of the spray kind (or aerosol thin spray), and spray it all over them if you were worried about bleaching.
If it's just for the face, try Neutragena (sp?) human sunscreen in the bottle for sensative (sp?) skin. It's white, with a blue cap. Supposedly goes on 'dry' so no oily residue, and it's gentle but effective. I use it, and everyone else in the family does too, so it works pretty good. I think it might even be water resistant too, which is good for the ones that like to play in the water buckets.
