Like previously stated, it could just be ignorance. My neighbor has about 20 horses. All of whom are a little underweight, long hooves, no shade in pastures, I don't think she even FEEDS grain. None of them are worked and just fight out for food in the pasture. I was going to call, unfortunately nothing would be done. I live in an area where they just don't do anything about that sort of thing =( Remember that post about those two horses neglected in NY (one with the halter IN the horses head?), yea that was about 25 minutes from my house =(

I would go and talk with them, if they become angry or whatever just tell them you will be notifying animal control.

My cousin's aren't horse people, so they don't notice it. But I'll give them a call and see if they can contact the local animal control or something. I wasn't sure if I was just overreacting about it. Thanks!

In situations like these, talking to the owners can be a little more beneficial than having animal control come out and confront them. At least if the AC there is unprofessional like it is in many areas.

However, I'd agree that it's neglect.

I'd have called animal control immediately personally. It is a crying shame but some people truly just do not know how to care for their animals. Too bad you don't have to pass a test just to own a horse.

In many states, including mine, ignorance doesn't give you a free pass. (basically it's a "you shoulda read a book, stupid")

I'm in Ga and I think Alabama laws are similar to mine. Get animal control out there, they will give them warnings and instructions on what to do before taking the horses away.

I don't know. If they're eating a somewhat proper diet and have hay/fresh water, they can fend for themselves...theres a heavy risk of founder, but atleast theyre not dying from starvation. Regular activity will keep horses hooves down to a somewhat decent length, and eating (which sounds like they're doing alot of haha) keeps the teeth from being horrible. Not saying I would ever keep my horses like this, but there are definitely much, much worse forms of neglect.

I would consider it neglect. And ignorance. Im willing to bet they have no idea that they are doing anything wrong.

Our farrier was just telling us today how he did a lady's horse for her and the horse was pretty skinny and he asked if she had wormed him and her response was "what's that?" ........ ignorance.

hay bellies, NO not neglect.

"Cracked" hooves....debatable.
overgrown...yep....neglect

Diarrhea.....are you sure they aren't being treated and the o just hasn't cleaned them up 100% yet? How long has it been there, did it just start? O could be out of town and having a friend watch them and hasn't noticed that they are sick yet. This is the time of year for owners to be on vacation.

Some of it can be caused for concern. Never hurts to call AC.
